Weekend Warrior – The Memorial Tournament
The Weekend Golf format is very different from the Classic Golf format and it is important to know how to build winning lineups and attack these contests over on DraftKings. Simply put, Weekend Golf is all about scoring. Fantasy points for finishing positions are no longer awarded so selecting the right golfers for your lineup will require the right mix of golfers who started off well and others who might just be finding their form for a solid weekend run.
Unless DraftKings brings back weekend golf – please let them know if you’re unhappy – all prices listed for full weekend will be FanDuel. The Saturday names to consider are all DraftKings pricing.
Thursday/Friday recap
Kyle Stanley co-leads at Memorial, but there have been some very notable performances so far from the studs like Tiger (-5 on Friday), the ever-injured Jason Day (-8 through 36), and strong showings from young stars like Wes Bryan, Beau Hossler and Jordan Niemann who is the other co-leader.
A lot of the players in the top-25 of the leaderboard fit a familiar archetype: bombers. Looking at players like Tony Finau, Gary Woodland and Luke List, to say nothing about Bubba and DJ, it would make sense to target those types of players through the next two rounds. Beyond that archetype fitting the course so far, those players also tend to score more highly thanks to easier play on par-5s and typically needing just short wedges in. The only ”strong” putters near the top are Wes Bryan and Jason Day, while the rest of the pack are typically getting their points by giving themselves tight looks from good play tee to green.
Notable missed cuts (E was the line): Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Charley Hoffman, Jason Dufner, Kevin Na, and Keith Mitchell.
The weekend
Weather consideration: Wind won’t be much of an issue on either Saturday or Sunday – topping out at a max of 15mph – but the rain should come into play on Sunday and possibly push the tournament into Monday; thundershowers are expected Sunday afternoon (70% chance) but really the effect on the course and players will be negligible. The rain will soften the course up, but given that it’s expected to last in the afternoon through the evening, any golfers that get delayed will most likely come back the next morning to the softer course. Unless targeting the very top of the leaderboard, don’t expect many others to be affected.
PLEASE NOTE: I have written up weather concerns in the past, just to see the Tour play split tees. They may yet do that, which would give nobody any distinct advantage.
MDF consideration: With 81 making the cut, the MDF is in play. Be careful with guys near the cut line, although you’ll typically get them at extremely low ownership.
