The Salary Cap Conundrum
The question of how much of your available salary cap you should utilize when building your rosters vs. how much you should leave unused in order to differentiate your lineups from the competition is one of the most hotly debated topics in DFS golf today.
I conducted a research study that includes nearly 400 winning GPP lineups from all buy-in levels over the last three years in Draftkings DFS Golf and how much of the salary cap they used and present the findings in this article.
Over the last five years of being involved in the DFS golf industry whether it be writing, studying, or playing myself, I have heard people throughout the industry proclaim their opinion week after week on what the ideal amount of the $50,000 salary cap should be utilized on Draftkings when building lineups. Anywhere from $200 to $2,000 has been suggested to set your rosters apart from the competition in large field GPPs with tens or hundreds of thousands of entries.
Leaving unused salary cap in order to be contrarian and differentiate lineups has become a staple recommendation in DFS golf articles and podcasts and every year it seems the amount of salary cap suggested to be unused increases. Recently I even heard a popular industry leader recommend not using $2,000 or more of the allotted salary. There is certainly no shortage of opinions, but never has there been an in-depth study of how much salary cap previous winners of large field GPPs have used in order to be victorious and win themselves tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars or even a million, until now.
