The First Tee – Wyndham Championship

You’ve probably heard this like a million times in the past few days, but I’m going to say it again anyways. For the first time in 112 years a gold medal has been awarded to a golfer. That golfer, 8.5% owned, Justin Rose.

Weekly Roundup– The Olympics

Probably the lowest % ownership on a high priced guy, that ended up winning, that I’ve seen since writing these articles. Overall I thought the Olympic golf experience was a smashing success. Not even a day later our own Jordan Spieth was out tweeting how he hopes to go in 2020… Yea a little late to the party kid. You blew it and you know it now you have to deal with it, but I hope you win gold in Tokyo. Now that my little Jordan Spieth rant is over, I’ll give my final thought on the Olympic golf experience, and that is to introduce a team event. First off, many other sports have both the individual and team events, and you already have a format that works in the Ryder Cup and President Cup. Extend that to the Olympics for 2020, for example say the top 4 two-man teams from each nation after individual play is completed will qualify for the team event. That event is played Ryder Cup style 18 four ball, 18 alternate shot, 18 individual matches. Just a thought and I’m very sure the smart people on the OGC (Olympic Golf Committee) will come up with something even better. For my last Olympic note, Aly Raisman won Silver…and that’s all for now.

My Fantasy Week Recap: I had chances across the board going into Sunday, even in the John Deere, but a Marcus Fraser blow up, and Ryan Moore edging out Ben Martin cost me a chance at some top 10 finishes. I was however able to score second in the $100 single entry contest, which helped edge out a profit for the week.

The Winning Strategy: Well you weren’t able to roster the medalists on the same team so obviously the importance was having Rose with either Stenson or Kuchar. If you read my First Tee last week I also gave you another huge piece to a winning lineup in Radolfo Cazaboun who finished in a tie for 30th, but ended up with over 80 DK points scored.

Right & Wrong
• Where I went Wrong- Only 7% Rose.
• Where I went Right- Cazaboun, Kuchar, Fraser.

Player Ownership Analysis

This week will be especially interesting to see how the large volume players faired, with Rose being so low owned. It must mean that very few of them were on him. Let’s take a look.

The Wyndham:

How about Usain Bolt though? Some serious generational talent going on right there. Onto another generational event, Jim Furyk returns to play after shooting 58 two weeks ago at the Travelers. The tour heads down south to Greensboro, NC and Sedgefield CC. A par 70 7100 yard Donald Ross design, that will play relatively easy for the guys on tour. Expect to see “John Deere” like numbers as previous winners have been 17,17,14,18,18,20,16,21 under par. Birdies, birdies, birdies.

1. Approach shots 150-175 – Over 30% of the shots taken in the last 7 years have come from this distance – Participating in this Tournament- I’m combining the two distances here. You’ll see two numbers per golfer – Garrigus-1st, Wilkinson-2nd, Danny Lee-7th, Glover-10th, Owen-11th

2. Ball Striking – with barley any rough, or cut very low, it’s all about ball striking and proximity – Players Participating in this Tournament – Glover-1st, Bradley-3rd, Aiken-4th, Pinckney-8th, Owen-10th

3. Proximity – Players Participating in this Tournament – Hearn-1st, Stiles-4th, Gore/garrigus-6th, Kelly/Furyk-9th

4. Strokes Gained Putting – Players Participating in this Tournament. Seems like no one in this tourney is a good putter! English-6th, Piler-8th, Landry-9th, Molder-10th, Kisner-12th

5. Tee to Green – Players Participating in this Tournament – Matsuyama-5th, Fowler-6th, Simpson-11th, Bradley-20th, Haas-21st

Player Focus: The Olympics

Well I got you two silver medals…Raisman and Stenson. Other than that I also had Cazaboun and Bourdy, and until Sunday, Pan. I’ll try and get back on my game and get you the winner this week.

On the Rise:

Ryan Moore – $10,600 – How can he not be number one on the list. -22??? That’s some amazing golf. I like him to continue the hot streak into the playoffs. A past winner here plus some pretty good overall stats, I like him for another great week.
o Target Finish-top 3

Webb Simpson – $10,200 – Wow course history here looks so good. Not quite as good as Stricker last week, but 6 5 11 22 1 is pretty darn good! His price here is expensive so bear that in mind, but I definitely like him for a top 10 this weekend, which is pretty much the breakeven.
o Target Finish- Top 5

Kevin Na – $9,100 – A great Sunday finish for Na has him trending in the right direction. Not a lot of CH here just 1/2 placing 18th in 2010. I like his recent form and decent value.
o Target Finish- Top 10

Rafa-Cabrera-Bello – $8,900 – Is this the breakthrough week for Rafa? A gritty 5th place finish at the Olympics, followed by a few other nice finishes like 4th at the Open De France, this well-traveled Spaniard looks for his first PGA Tour victory this week.
o Target Finish- Top 10

Kevin Kisner – $8,100 – Always a low owned play, Kisner is 4/4 in his last four starts and he’s 3/3 here placing 8th in 2014. I like him to make a run into the playoffs.
o Target Finish- Top 15

Robert Garrigus – $7,700 – What a nice little run Robert is on. 22nd 5th MC 11th are his last 4 starts. 5/6 here I like him for a low owned player this week.
o Target Finish- Top 15

Scott Brown – $7,200 – Finished third here last and coming off a 16th place finish at the John Deere I like Brown to make a push into the playoffs.
o Target Finish- Top 20

Matt Jones – $6,300 – On the bubble, Jones, needs a good week to solidify his spot in the playoffs. He’s had success here in the past placing 5th in 2013.
o Target Finish-Top 25

Johnson Wagner – $6,100 – after a 5th place finish, DK rewards him with a salary like this!? Wow this screams good value as Wagner now has secured his spot in the playoffs. Let’s see if he can make a push for the Tour Championship.
o Target Finish-Top 25

Whee Kim – $5,700 – Another guy on the playoff bubble, Kim played inspired golf last week at the John Deere earning a T3. I like him to continue that form and earn himself a spot in the playoffs.
o Target Finish-Top 25

Pick to Click: The first edition of the “pick to click” scored is a bronze medal. I’ll try and get you the winner this week.

Patrick Reed– $12,200 Searching for his first victory of the season, what better place to do it than a place he’s already won it. For that reason and a great round on Sunday, he’s my pick to click.
On the Bubble: Here, just in case it’s hard for you to find I’m going to list players ranked 120-130 playing in this tournament. These players need to be inside the top 125 to make the playoffs which start next week.

• 120- Blayne Barber
• 121- David Toms
• 122- Seung Yul Noh
• 123- Sung Kang
• 124- Matt Jones
• 125- Whee Kim
• 126- Scott Stallings
• 127- Kyle Stanley
• 128- Nick Taylor
• 129- Steve Marino
• 130- Bronsoon Burgoon

Heading South – Fades

Both Garcia and Hun-An played decently but neither gave you a good return on dollars invested. Let’s see if I can get them again.

Rickie Fowler-$11,700 I may regret this, but you guys know why he’s here. Way too high priced for the recent form.

Hidieki Matsuyamam– $11,400 He’s 0/2 in his last two starts here. That’s the sole reason why he’s on the list, plus a super high salary.
