The First Tee – Waste Management Open – by Jason Rouslin

I must confess, I still believe, still believe! Ok, enough Britney Spears, but I must confess this might be my favorite First Tee yet. The reason? Because it will show that dedication, time invested, and research does in fact pay off from time to time. To win big in DK you need three important things among many others, but these are my top 3, 1st– Bankroll, 2nd– Insight, fortitude, software/information and finally 3rd – Luck. If you don’t have the first two you need a heck a lot of number 3 to win big. However, if you’ve been following along with me this year, building the bankroll is something I’ve stressed, and hopefully this article has helped you do that thus far in 2017. Beyond my personal results in DK, more details later, this is also my favorite edition because I’ve been talking about Jon Rahm for quite some time, and I think this is just the first of many more to come.

DraftKing Pro Results: This is the first time I get to write about myself making the list, not because I’m the author, but because of the results. If you haven’t seen them yet from this past weekend, I’ll share them below.

For the first time this year we had a user win both the 3$ (this week named Drive the Green normally named The Birdie) and the $33 Dogleg with the same lineup. He also max entered both contests. To check out your own ownership reports Click Here.

CSURAM88- Well again, Jennings switches things up, and only played the top $ buy-in contests. He didn’t cash in either.

Mazwa- He’s back after a one week vacation, however Jon Rahm was not 1 of the 28 players selected, so you can imagine the results are going to be lackluster.

Jrozzinri– Well it goes without saying, I had the week we all hope to have when playing this ‘game’.  It’s just so crazy how DK can be sometimes. I earned multiple top spots across the board this week, as the top two were a second-place finish in the Dogleg, but better than that, for me mentally (not monetarily) was the win in the Clubhouse $1060. It was my first win, and it came in TRUE DFS FASHION.  Patrick Rodgers made birdie on 18, the second to last putt of the tournament, to earn a T4th. Now I didn’t roster him, neither did anyone I was playing against, but with him moving from a T8th to a T4th, it moved the T8th guys into a T9th, -2 points on DraftKings, and I was able to hurdle over user “DaGodFather” by ½ point for the victory. I’m sure @Fantasygolfers was the loudest one cheering in the audience on 18 when that putt (Rodgers) went in. You can’t make this stuff up.

DK-Contest Stats & Trends: In this section, I’m going to provide some quick stats and trends and sometimes a few peculiar facts.

  • 150 users max entered the 3$, 13 users maxed out the $33, 9 maxed out the $333
  • The lowest percentage that had 6 golfers through the cut we have seen in a while, and it was under 3% after Martin Laird was an MDF.
  • DJ was owned by 80% of the lineups in the Thunderdome.
  • A max user won both the low $ buy in GPPs.

Waste Management Stats & Trends:

An easier task at hand this week at the WMO. Although not much easier as the cut line hovers around even par. A pretty decent field with 10 of the top 25 golfers in the OWGR are here. A theme I think we will continue to see at every tournament this year.

Last week’s results:  Snedeker & English- rather lackluster

Stats:2016-17 stats now used

  • Birdie or Better*- Always
    • Spieth, JT, Matsuyama, Knox, Piercy, Rahm
  • 175-200 Approach Shots-
    • Spieth, Lee, Hun-an, Oosthuizen, Finau
  • Ball Striking-
    • Stanley, Spieth, Horschel, Glover, Herman
  • Strokes Gained Putting-
    • Day, English, Baddeley, Mickelson, Molder
  • Tee to Green- JT, Rahm, Glover, Steele, Stanley

Trends:

  • Average Winning Score Since 2004- -18 *Phil Mickelson shot -28 in 2013 so it kind of skews this number a bit.
  • Average Cut Score: Even
  • Stats from Last Year’s Winner- Rough Proximity

Player Focus:  Guys, there’s no other way to say it – I nailed it. If you followed me last week, even with Hubbard, you made money. Maybe lots.

  • Percentage of Picks that Made the Cut – 70%
  • Number of Winners Picked – 2
  • Number of Top 10s Picked 3 Events – 12
  • Average Salary of Winner: $9,000

Players: Top 5 guys and a Pick to Click this Week.

Last Week’s Result: T9th, T9th, T17th, MDF, MC, MC

  • Jon Rahm- $9,700 All he needed to do was make a 60ft eagle putt to shoot 65 at Torrey Pines for his first career victory – oh wait, he did. I’m terribly upset at DK for pricing him here, he’s going to be about 85% owned, probably not that high but I think you can expect a near 50% ownership.
  • Gary Woodland- $9,000 He’s playing well, it’s just the South Course can get tough with his erratic off the tee game. (The rough is not nearly as penal here, as it was at Torrey South) His best score of the week came on the easier of the two courses, the North Course, so I expect to see scores like that here. He also boosts a 6/7 record at the WMO.
  • Kevin Na- $7,500 Course horse pick of the week. 10/11 here. Multiple top 5’s and 10’s. He’s not playing great right now but, it’s good value.
  • Roberto Castro- $6900 Roberto played well this weekend, but averaged 32 per putts per round. That’s not good. If he fixes that problem this week on easier greens, you could expect to see a couple of scores in the high 60’s. If he continues to hit greens at the pace he was at Torrey Pines, I expect a good finish. He’s also 2/2 here with two decent finishes inside the top 20.
  • Zac Blair- $6,600 A rather funny guy, at least it seems that way by his Twitter feed and reactions, comes in playing some good golf. He had a tough Sunday, but has made all three cuts this year, and played well here last year placing 33. For almost the min, I think he presents some rather decent upside.

Pick to Click: 3 guys above 10k this week.

  • Jordan Spieth- $12,000 Priced this high, I think it’s his turn to win, and DK knows it.

Fades:

Last Week’s Results: 1.5/2 Casey was decent, until Sunday.  D.Lee- MC

  • Pat Perez- $8,000 This could turn into another JT scenario where, I truly like the golfer and like where the game is, but for Perez he just doesn’t play well here. 7/13 with his best finish being 11th in 2014. Again, I don’t think he misses the cut, but I don’t see him in contention come Sunday.
  • Robert Garrigus- $7,300 Here’s a guy who MC’d last week, and gets a price bump? Doesn’t make sense. I’m out this week, as he’s 3/7 here.

Names to know, or I had to look up.

  • Craig Hocknull- $7,000 The local PGA pro for some unknown reason is priced above the likes of Daniel Berger, Louis Oosthouzien, among others. This guy Hocknull, who no offense is probably just a little better than me at golf, missed 6 cuts in 2012 playing on the Web.com Tour.  This one just makes no sense at all. Good luck Craig if you read this.
