The First Tee – Puerto Rico Open by Jason Rouslin
The tour heads to PR this week where the economic shape of the soon to be 53rd state of the USA, could really use some nice tourism in good weather… But let me tell you something, mother nature doesn’t care about that, as it looks like she is going to bring the full complement of wind and rain this weekend. More to come on that later. First let’s see how the pros on this list dominated the top of the contests this week.

Players: Top 5 Guys and a Pick to Click this Week
Last Week’s Result: Well I went 6/6! T 4 T7 T13 T28 T 4169
- Luke List ($9,900) List returns a price that we saw toward the beginning of the season for, but this time it’s against a very weak field. This is a perfect place for List to get his first tour victory as he game has seen vast improvements this year both in form and consistency. He’s made 3 straight cuts and has made the cut in both of his starts here at CoCo beach finishing 15th and 50th. If the weather is somewhat decent he should be able to use his length to his advantage, however, if the weather reports end up being accurate, his ability to overpower the course may be diminished.
- Fabrizio Zanotti ($9,500) Zanotti has burst onto the scene here in 2017 getting a win at the Maybank Challenge 6 weeks ago. He followed that up with a 12th place finish in Mexico so obviously, something is clicking in his game. He will be looking to add a PGA tour victory to his resume for this year, which would earn him exempt status on both tours for the next 2 years. He’s played here 3 times, making the cut only once finishing 27th in 2015, so if you’re a CH and only believer, this isn’t your guy.
- Danny Lee ($8,700) Omg…I can’t believe I’m putting on here, but ya know what? This is a PERFECT spot for him. He’s coming off back to back top 25s and came in second here in 2014. We know he’s got the talent, and maybe he’s really starting to find his form. I like him for a GPP play.
- J. Spaun ($8,200) For a guy that struggles out of the rough, won’t find anything like that here in PR. No course history to speak off and his RF his somewhat of a roller coaster, but with the strength of field being so weak, he could come out and win it, or miss the cut. I would only play him in GPP.
- Sean Setafni ($6,200) Whether he keeps his clothes on or not, Stefani is a good GPP play this week. He doesn’t have many starts left, so he must start making some noise soon. He’s been scrambling very well this year ranking 12th on tour, so that might bode well for him at a course that gives you plenty of up and down opportunities. 1/2 here so not much CH to go off, but I like him to at least get to the weekend.
- Mark Hubbard ($6,200) A guy that is seemingly priced at this level every week, is priced here again even with a weak field. He is coming off two missed cuts, but he had similar results the weeks prior leading up to this event, and that didn’t stop him from placing in the top 30 in both of his starts here (15th in 2016 and 27th in 2015). He is an absolute birdie machine, as he led the tour in total birdies last year, so I expect him to pick up a bunch more this week.
Pick to Click: 4 Guys above 10k this Week.
- Wes Bryan ($10,800) Sitting at 73 in the OWGR Bryan needs two more good starts in the next few weeks to get him to Augusta. He’ll need back to back top 5’s to have a chance at the top 50 OWGR for the automatic qualification, but if he can’t get in that way, he’s going to have to win. This is the week to do that as the field is very much like what he faced on the web.com tour last season where he won multiple times. No course history to speak off, but he has made 5 straight cuts with 3 of them being inside the top 10. The march to Augusta starts, and IMO ends here.
Fades:
Last Week’s Results: Laird missed the cut, but Watson made it. YAY!
- Scott Brown- Not for 9800 with his RF. I’ll pass.
- Chris Kirk- No way. At 9k. His game is just off right now. Hope he finds it soon.
Names to know, or I had to look up-
- Michael Bradley ($5,900) a two-time winner of this event, Bradley doesn’t get many starts a year, but this is one he looks forward to making the 6/7 times.
- Rafael Campos ($6,100) The local narrative as Campos brought the fans out last year as he had shot to win on the weekend. He walked away finishing in 8th which earned him another start. Let’s see if he came do the same again this year.
