The First Tee – Genesis Open – by Jason Rouslin

I’ve had the absolute pleasure and luxury of traveling the Hawaiian island the last 2 weeks, whether it was playing Kapalua Plantation course, traveling down the Road to Hana (NEVER AGAIN BTW) or sailing the Na’Pali Coast, I learned many things.  One of the most glaring and important things I learned is that each island is so very different, but just as beautiful as the last. So, one might ask, what in the heck does this have to do with DFS-Golf? Simple. There are many ways to create a winning lineup. Be sure to check out the contest section for more trends.

DraftKing Pro Results: *** Note for this week alone, I only am recording top 25’s. Because I was in Hawaii I couldn’t get the results off all the tournaments since I didn’t play in them. Thanks to @TFF and www.thefantasyfanatics.com for compiling this data so I could at least showcase the top finishers.

DraftCheat- Pete of Fanvice makes his first appearance on our pro-list as it looks like this is a few weeks in a row of max entries. Since he’s well known on the Twitter verse, and a good outcome this week, I decided to add him to the list.

Jrozzinri– Well a weird week for me, as I was only able to play the Dogleg.  I had an issue with my “location” therefore I was removed from all contests, and by the time I could reenter, the Dogleg was the only one open. I was able to sneak 2 lineups into the 333-club pro, and both lineups cashed.

DK-Contest Stats & Trends: In this section, I’m going to provide some quick stats and trends and sometimes a few peculiar facts.

  • 165 users max entered the 3$, 25 users maxed out the $33, 9 maxed out the $333
  • Roughly 6% of the lineups made it through with all 6/6 golfers.
  • *There’s more than 1 way to win/be different. Birdiekiller1982 came in 6th in the Dogleg contest without rostering Jordan Spieth. You also don’t have to max enter to win, as thedon59 entered 8 different lineups and took down first place in the 33$.

Genesis Open Stats & Trends:

Back to a normal 36 hole cut here in the land of the stars, as the tour moves just up the coast to LA to play at TPC Riviera.

Last week’s results:  2 weeks in a row the stats have seemed to nail down the right guys, and even identified some good cheap options in Kisner, Luke Donald, Derek Fathauer and Garrigus.

Stats: Last Year’s vs This Year’s vs Last

  • Strokes Gained Off the Tee –
    • Watson/DJ/Rose/Thomas/Koepka vs DJ/Watson/Garcia/Rose/Holmes
  • Birdie or Better
    • DJ, Day, Spieth, Koepka, Matsuyama vs JT/Spieth/Scott/Matsuyama/Lahiri
  • Strokes Gained Putting-
    • Day, Spieth, Kisner, Stricker, Summerhays vs Harman/Donald/Fathauer/Kim/Kizzire
  • Tee 2 Green-
    • DJ, Rose, Simpson, Woodland, Chappell vs JT/DJ/Rose/Stanley/Matsuyama
  • Shot Dispersion- 200-225
    • Furyk/Kjledsen/English/Thomas/Holmes

Trends:

  • Average Winning Score Since 2010- -12
  • Average Cut Score: +1
  • Stats from Last Year’s Winner- Strokes Gained off the Tee

Player Focus:  Well I picked you the winner in telling you to take Spieth, but other than that my results were off quite a bit last week. I’ll look to do better this week.

  • Percentage of Picks that Made the Cut – 65%
  • Number of Winners Picked – 3
  • Number of Top 10’s Picked 5 Events – 14
  • Average Salary of Winner: $10,800

***Note- the following players may be on there for a few reasons. Recent form/course history/ownership projections are all taken into account. Because this is a Monday column, things can change over 3 days, which may, or may not affect my personal ownership percentages. Players: Top 5 Guys and a Pick to Click this Week.

Last Week’s Result: 1st, 23rd, 55th, MC, MC, MC

  • Sergio Garcia- $9,300 Other than his MC last year, he’s 3/4 here with 3 finishes inside the top 15. Coming off a win in Dubai, Sergio’s game seems to be in great early season form. Maybe the Ryder Cup ignited that passion once again? Maybe he finally wins a major? Only time will tell, but for this tournament I like another solid top 10 finish.
  • Justin Rose- $8,400 Everything set up for him to have a great finish last week, but nonetheless a bad start to Thursday’s round, and a bad Sunday finish, led to a T39th. However, his game seems to be coming into form, his price came down, and he’s 5/5 here. I like him for cash, and a healthy amount in GPP.
  • Marc Leishman-$7,600 3 straight top 25’s to start the 2017 season for Marc, as the flat stick has been working – ranked in the top 20 on tour to start the season. He’s 5/7 here in LA with 3 finishes inside the top 20 including 5th last year. For 7,600 I think you’re getting a great value.
  • Brendan Steele-$7,100 There are a ton of guys in this price range that I really like this week. Steele sticks out the most with 4/4 cuts on the season and 2 top 10’s, and all 4 top 20’s. Really great value here.
  • Thomas Pieters- $6,700 One thing I love about being a part of the FGI community is most, if not all of you, are fans of the game of golf. @AlexMicheletti clued me onto him, so I just had to do a little more digging. Here this week on a sponsor’s exemption, Pieters won the 2012 NCAA Men’s National Championship with rounds of 68, 69,71. At this price and past success here, I like it a lot.

Pick to Click: 5 Guys above 10k this Week.

  • Ok well Spieth had his turn, Mats has won everything, DJ and Day both played well last week, Adam Scott loves this course… I don’t know if you can really fade any of them, but if you have to pick one, and just only one this week, Jay Day’s ($10,000) value is too hard to pass up.

Fades:

Last Week’s Results: Both guys, Kang and Si Woo, were MC’s so my fades worked. Let’s see what I find this week.

  • Bubba Watson- $8,300 I’m not playing him much until I see he’s figured out how to putt again. Until then good luck to all and Bubba, and his pink ball.
  • Martin Laird- $7.500 Turning into this year’s version of the 2016 Danny Lee, I’m done rostering him over 5%.

Names to know, or I had to look up- Last week this section identified Patrick Cantlay, who made the cut and was able to return value to his shareholders. I happened to be one of them.

  • Michael Block- ($7,000) Looks like our local pro of the week. This guy won a qualifier and is currently the PGA Pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club. Again, I’m sure he’s better than me, but not by that much. I hope he makes the cut, as he’s made a handful in his career, but no sense rostering him this week.
  • Jinho Choi- ($6,900) Ranked 295th in the world and plays mostly out in the Asian/Japanese tours. He last competed at the SMBC Singapore Open where he finished T51st. That tournament did have some big names that are actually playing here this week, Garcia/Scott, but at 6,900 I don’t think he’s worth any shares.
  • Kevin Hall- ($6,700) Man, incredible stuff right here. Hall, deaf since age 2, is playing this week by way of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption. This is an exemption that allows a minority the ability to compete in a PGA Tour event, an exemption now in its 9th Since his 2004 Big Ten Championship he won at Ohio State, Hall is an active player on the mini tours. At 34 years old, this would be golf’s best story of the year if he were to play himself into contention.
