Back to California for 2 straight weeks, after the brief stop in Phoenix, which is always one of the most well attended, try most ever this weekend, and is always full of excitement. Matsuyama, in his second straight year, won a playoff to a defend his title. Crazy.

DraftKing Pro Results: Wow, almost back to back for one of our new residents, and now leading the POTY standings, but our defending champ came up with his first win of the season.

DK-Contest Stats & Trends: In this section, I’m going to provide some quick stats and trends and sometimes a few peculiar facts.

  • 143 users max entered the 3$, 23 users maxed out the $33, 9 maxed out the $333
  • Another low % got 6/6 as Bubba, Knox, and Woodland all missed – all where highly owned.

AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Stats & Trends:

We have another 54-hole cut event as the first 3 days of this tournament are spent on 3 different courses around Pebble. Cypress & Spyglass are the other 2 courses. The whole field, after the 54-hole cut, will play Pebble on Sunday.

Last week’s results:  Last week my stat categories made a comeback as it had a 1st, 3rd, 6th 10th,  T16th, and a few other good ones! Not bad.

Stats: Last Year’s vs This Year’s vs Last

 Birdie or Better*- Always

  • Strokes Gained Approach to Green-
    • Simpson/Mickelson/Garrigus/Points/Chappell vs. Spieth/Norlander/Phil/Simpson
  • Birdie or Better
    • DJ, Day, Spieth, Palmer, Mickelson vs Spieth/Rose/Mickelson/Rahm/Owen
  • Strokes Gained Putting-
    • Day, Spieth, Kisner, Stricker, Summerhays vs Luke Donald?/Michael Thompson/Gribble/Fathauer/Ferendez Castano
  • Tee 2 Green-
    • DJ, Rose, Simpson, Woodland, Chappell vs Rose/Kisner/Rahm/DJ/Spieth
  • Shot Dispersion- If you’ve been reading my article for a bit now you know I like to put in the yardage where most shots are taken between. I will tweet this later on in the week.

Trends:

  • Average Winning Score Since 2010- -17
  • Average Cut Score: -3
  • Stats from Last Year’s Winner- Strokes gained approach to the green

Player Focus:  What a stacked field we have this week. THREE of our top 6 golfers in the world (Day, Spieth, DJ) and it will be the first time we have that this year in a normal cut event.

  • Percentage of Picks that Made the Cut – 65%
  • Number of Winners Picked – 2
  • Number of Top 10s Picked 4 Events – 13
  • Average Salary of Winner: $9,800

***Note- the following players may be on there for a few reasons. Recent form/course history/ownership projections are all taken into account. Because this is a Monday column, things can change over 3 days, which may, or may not affect my personal ownership percentages. Players: Top 5 guys and a Pick to Click this Week.

Last Week’s Result: 10th, 16th, 16th, MC, MC, MC

  • Patrick Reed- $8,300 A decent week in Phoenix finishing in 23rd, and his game seemed to be in good shape. I will say to monitor his respiratory infection that is causing him to miss some international tournaments, but he’s 4/4 here with 3 top 15’s including 2 top 10’s.
  • Jimmy Walker- $8,800 Sick in Honolulu must have set him back as he also missed the cut at the Farmers. However, since 2011 he’s finished no worse than 21st and 4 top 10’s including a win and a third place finish. I like him to get his game back on track this week in Southern California.
  • Jonas Blixt- $7,800 Is it finally time to give this guy a look? Another strong Friday gave him a shot over the weekend, however a bad Saturday knocked him out of contention. Still at 7900 it’s expensive, and because of that ownership will be lower.
  • Sean O’Hair- $7,300 Hasn’t missed a cut here since, well before the stats I’m looking at. He’s 7/7 here since 2010. (even made the cut at the US Open when it was at Pebble as well). Coming off his worst performance of the year at the WMO finishing 47th, he’ll look to rebound and add his third top 20 this week.
  • Cameron Smith- $6,900 Well, made it in as an alternate last week in Scottsdale, and he turned that opportunity into a decent 42nd place finish. Match that up with a good start to the season with a 27th in Oahu and a 33rd at the Farmers, I like his chances to make the cut again here in California.

Pick to Click: 4 guys above 10k this week.

  • I’m picking Spieth to win until he wins. So, he’s gonna win this week.

Fades:

Last Week’s Results: Well Patty Perez was a WD after like 6 holes so if you followed my notion to fade him, you are very thankful. Garrigus returned value.

  • Sung Kang- $7,700 What? I mean I know he’s coming out of a T12th in the desert, but still, no thanks.
  • Si Woo Kim- $7,400 I wouldn’t be surprised to see him WD prior to the event. Something’s not right here.

Names to know, or I had to look up.

  • Neal Lancaster- $7,100- This 54-year-old comes to California by way of a sponsor’s exemption. He plays most of the time on the Champions Tour. I’m not interested.
  • Ray Otis- $7,000- Head golf professional at CordeValle Golf Club. I’m sure he’s a good golfer, but not against these guys.
  • Rich Berberian-6,800- 2 starts. No cuts. No thanks
  • Patrick Cantlay- $6,800– This guy comes with a story. One I had to even learn this week. He was the number one ranked amateur golfer in the world for 55 straight weeks, and finished in the top-25 of his first four PGA starts, including a round of 60 at the Traveler’s Championship, shot when he was an amateur. In 2013 the year he turned pro, he had a stress fracture in his back, but that was the least of his worries. He was out one night with his friend and caddie, Chris Roth, who was hit by a car and passed away tragically from the accident. He was supposed to play in last year’s career builder, but again back pain kept him out. Finally, after 10 months, and a renewed dedication to the game in honor of the tragic accident, Cantlay steps onto the tee this week for the first time in over 12 months. He’s said to be playing six to seven days a week, and really dedicating himself to the game. He’s got 10 starts left on his medical exemption, where he needs to make about $400,000 to gain unlimited sponsor invites –  or about $800,000 for his card.
  • Brett Coletta- 6,400 This 21-year-old from Australia placed 6th in his lone start on the Euro-PGA Tour this year. This kid has a ton of accolades in the Australian golf system and if it’s any indication of his talent, Australia has produced the likes of Jason Day, Adam Scott & Steven Bowditch… I like his chances to succeed on tour.
