The Daily Spin – NFL Cash Game Focus – NFL Divisional Playoffs

It is both the best of times and the worst of times as an NFL fan going into this weekend. On a positive note, this is the best football weekend of the season with the NFL divisional round playoffs which presents us with four incredible games, each with dynamic story lines and marquee players on both sides of the ball. We have representation from the east coast, the west coast, the midwest and the deep south. Each game is expected to be fairly high scoring by Vegas standards, but defenses are alive and well as we saw last week in four grinding, hard fought, low scoring affairs. We have at least two future Hall of Fame QBs in action and several playing for their legacies this week. I am so excited for the games to get underway on Saturday afternoon that I have hardly been able to peel my eyes away from my computer screen as I build and rebuild my lineup over and over again in trying to anticipate every possibility and ownership concern going into the weekend.

On the downside this week, our window of NFL football is closing quickly. This is the final week that I will be putting out a column and the last week of the season for me to participate in NFL DFS contests. Yes, there are contests next week and perhaps I will throw a couple of teams into a Showdown game or two, but with only four teams, the ability to differentiate is very difficult and since my area of expertise lies in NFL cash games, there are not many edges left to exploit and one or two players will dominate and tilt the slate as opposed to the regular season where one player’s amazing performance does not necessarily ruin you if you can make up the points in another roster slot. It is always sad for me to say goodbye to the NFL each year as cash games there have been very easy to be profitable at for the last four years or so since I started to play DFS at a serious level. We win at cash games in golf as well, but it is certainly a more volatile game where things can go off the rails for even the best of players in a given event.

This week is really going to be a unique challenge for DFS purposes, especially for those of you that are still playing in cash games this week. I have spent hours going over my model and trying to decide which star players are going to make the roster and which ones I am going to be terrified to fade as we are going to have to leave a number of players on the bench that have heavy scoring potential. I think it is critical to dig into each game individually in order to tease out the best plays as the flow of each game should determine the direction that we want to go with our roster this week.
