The Daily Spin – NFL Cash Game Edition – Week 14

Things continue to roll along well for us in cash games after another big winning day last Sunday. We started the season off trading wins and losses early on and I was getting a little frustrated at just missing out on a couple of close weeks where we really could have made some nice money, but over the last month, things could not have gone much better as we’ve found a groove and haven’t looked back. There has been so much value on the board each week to work with that it has allowed us to really zero in on the best of the best matchups with the premier players and in that regard, we always seem to have a little edge over our opponents with the time and research that goes into putting together this article each week.

If you read my column closely last week, it should have been very easy to follow what I was going to do for the week. Obviously, my rant against those who tell you that you cannot play a QB/RB stack in cash under any circumstance and the specific example I used with Mahomes should have been a dead giveaway that I had plans to stack Mahomes and Ware for the week. We knew that Ware would come into the week heavily owned. I figured 80%+ and sure enough, he eclipsed 90%. For anyone who can’t possibly fathom playing a RB with any other skill player on the same team, that level of ownership essentially wiped out most of the Chiefs from having much exposure in cash games. I cannot tell you how happy I was to see Mahomes come in at a mere 10-15% owned in a game that we absolutely knew he would be slinging the ball all day, especially with Ware not being thrust into the starting lineup until after practice on Friday. While Ware did not do all that much, which was not a terrible surprise, Mahomes exceeded expectations and threw for over 300 yards and 4 TDs, helping to launch my team far ahead of the cash line by the end of the day.

By paying down for Ware, it allowed me access to CMC who continued to dominate again last week. As Cam’s shoulder becomes more of a problem late in the year, the downfield passing game is dying away for the Panthers and after watching Cam throw one miserable INT after another last week, I don’t think the game plan will change much in the weeks ahead. The other easy money play at RB was Phillip Lindsay, the undrafted rookie out of Denver who gashed the pathetic Bengals defense for over 100 yards and two TDs in what continues to be one of the best stories of the season. $5700 was a silly price for how well he has been playing and for that particular matchup so it lined up great and allowed us to save a few dollars.

At wideout, it was a weird week. With some salary constraints as I built in receivers last, I ended up having just enough money to use Chris Godwin. I liked Adam Humphries slightly more than Godwin, but I had $3900 left and Godwin was in play so I decided to drop down rather than reshuffling my team. Both guys played well, but Godwin eclipsed 100 yards and scored a TD so my deep value plays paid off big. In the middle ranges, I used DJ Moore going against the Bucs. He had a great matchup and at times it looked like he might break a big play, but his numbers ended up just being okay and he was a mild disappointment. The one landmine I ran into last week was in my highest priced WR, Julio Jones. Yes, I know the Ravens are tough, but I didn’t think they would completely neutralize Julio the way that they did. He caught a couple of early passes and then nothing the rest of the way at home. In fact, I am not even sure the Falcons offense ever saw the field since every Red Zone cut away took me to a Ravens possession. It was disappointing, but I am willing to take a hit with Julio who has been super consistent for most of the season.

At TE, I followed the chalk in jumping on a very cheap Eric Ebron who is back to being the primary target at TE now that Jack Doyle is on the IR the rest of the way. Andrew Luck looked his way often against the Jags and even though he did not score, he was still very productive and easily covered his salary for the week. Finally, on defense, I went with the Packers in a game where I felt they were the ultimate of locks at home, in December, against a rookie QB and a team from Arizona. I watched in stunned silence as the Packers played so badly that I looked like they had thrown in the towel on their season. I have seen some shocking losses over the years, but that is one of the worst I have ever witnessed for an Aaron Rodgers team. Fortunately, I was in such great shape the entire day that I could afford to begin to root heavily against GB by mid afternoon and could only smile while envisioning sad Packer fans leaving Lambeau quietly on a cold day in December with their playoff hopes crippled.
