The Daily Spin – DraftKings Preview – Travelers Championship

The RBC Heritage is always one of my strongest events each year and last week provided more strong results for us. I think much of our success at the event over the years is that we know the course so well and the type of player that should excel that it is never too difficult to craft a player pool that will have success. Obviously, having Webb Simpson heavily weighted was an easy decision. After missing the cut, most everyone who has been around DFS golf saw the price decrease as an opportunity to get more shares and to get him onto more rosters for the week. With his irons dialed in and after knocking off the rust with his putter, he played especially well on the last nine holes on Sunday hitting several long putts to roar into the lead and built it up enough to withstand a couple of late charges from competitors.

The best move of the week in our core was Daniel Berger. Many players are onto the strategy of going back to an elite player the week after they were chalk so Simpson being heavily owned was no surprise. But on the other end of the spectrum, almost nobody owned Daniel Berger a week after his win at Colonial, which marked his 4th straight Top-10 finish overall. When a golfer is playing that well and that consistently, the ‘winner’s bias’ is a great way to exploit ownership trends, especially during the virus when there just are not as many outside distractions to deal with the week following a win.

But we were not done there. We played the correct two big names up top in Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau. JT struggled to start the week, but came back to make the cut on the line and then played extremely well over the weekend and was able to get to the clubhouse tied with the lead after his round on Sunday to lock up another Top-10 to restart the season. Bryson was about the same, getting stronger as the tournament moved on, but slowing down late on Sunday with a couple of missed opportunities.

From there, within the core alone, we had a lot of shares of 2nd place finisher Abraham Ancer. All season, I have been saying that Ancer is going to get a win and he was so close again last weekend and played really well on Sunday in not missing a single green in regulation.We will not be getting a price break on him again until he misses a cut or two, but his game is really coming together. The same can be said for Justin Rose who looks much better out of the break after getting off to a rough start this season. I am not sure what he did over the break, but moving on from Honma was the smart play and hopefully, he gets back to being the player he was as world #1 two years ago.

Other players in the core/secondary plays that worked out well for us – Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Joel Dahmen (until the final round, Tyrell Hatton, Sergio Garcia, Viktor Hovland, JT Poston, Rory Sabbatini and Brian Harman

There were a couple of notable misses which included Sungjae Im  and Kevin Kisner, two golfers that I never would have expected to miss the cut coming into the week give Im’s incredible form and consistent play and Kisner’s comfort playing an event in the area of the country where he grew up, but overall, I was very pleased with the way the results came out for the week. Cash games were an easy winner for my team as only Kisner missed the cut and GPPs were profitable as well though I could not quite find that perfect lineup to break through for a monster payday which was disappointing given how well many of the picks did for the week. It was a really fun tournament with a great leaderboard and an exciting finish so hopefully, that is a positive sign for how things proceed for the rest of the summer.
