The Daily Spin – DraftKings Preview – The American Express

There are a few big things going on this week to be aware of in the sporting world. First, the Conference Championship games will take place for the NFL and we have two amazing games. Next, there are two UFC cards this week. The first is a minor card on Wednesday with lineup lock at 8am CST!!! Be sure to reserve your contest entries now if you have not done so already and be sure to be awake in the hour before lineup lock (lesson learned the hard way for me last week). There have been a lot of fights that have fallen off of cards in the last couple of hours before lineup lock over the last year with COVID so you have to be sure you are on top of things and ready to go so you are not drawing dead immediately. On Saturday night, we have the return of Conor Mcgregor in a rematch against Dustin Poirier which I think we be a much different fight than what we saw six years ago. In any case, be sure to join our MMA Slack channel (#mma) where you’ll get a breakdown of the card and some very helpful tips on how to play the event for DFS purposes. I cannot tell you just how much more fun DFS makes even the most mundane of MMA cards and really adds energy to the high profile events.

RECAP

My cash game team did not hit for me last week which led to a disappointing loss. It is frustrating to lose when my cash picks were so stellar overall. Out of my 20 cash game picks, only two missed the cut. Unfortunately, I landed on Scott Piercy and he started slowly and like he’s prone to do, could not make a putt in his two rounds and missed the cut. It was the usual case for me with Piercy as I so often catch him when he’s in form and at a course where he’s been strong and then it all falls apart.

Last week was tough overall just from the perspective that so many owners were able to get 6/6 for the week which meant that you needed to have an unusually strong 5/6 lineup in order to get into the green for the week. None of my golfers finished inside of the Top-10 so there was no sweat at all at any point over the weekend which is never fun, but also not heartbreaking as I was far from just barely coming up short.

I may have misjudged the weather a little bit. The winds were heavier on Thursday morning which I knew was going to be the case, but it did end up leading to about a .7 stroke difference between AM and PM for the day. All of my morning golfers started slow on Thursday compared to my three PM golfers. I do not think it was a situation where I needed to go all AM golfers, but it certainly could have been a tie breaker between players that I was on the fence about.

Up top, I went back and forth during the week between starting with Palmer/Kisner/Henley or Sungjae/Palmer. As the week wore on, the Sungjae hype really picked up around the industry. It felt like he might end up being a very high owned play in cash games and coming off of a great performance in Kapalua, I started to get nervous about fading him and then fighting an uphill battle if he played really well, which felt very possible. I let it sway me too much, which is disappointing as I had plenty of worries about his short game that were not there for Kisner and Henley and those fears proved to be true as Sungjae again struggled with his putter and never really got on track as he finished 56th. It would not have made any difference as even with my alternative team, I still would have been about 20 points short of cashing as Piercy was always going to be my value play regardless of my team at the top.

Palmer started slowly, looked good on Friday and Saturday, but just did not score enough to make a big move up the board. The tricky part at Sony is that you really need to play four strong rounds in order to be in the mix. My other value plays did okau as CHIII worked his way into the Top-20, but Brian Harman and Emiliano Grillo did very little other than making the cut. I feel okay about my process overall, though in hindsight, it may have just been best to lock in Webb Simpson, though I likely still would have ended up with Piercy and not had enough points from my other golfers.
