RECAP
Some people are excited about the fact that we will have two iterations of The Masters over the next 6 months, but what about the Corales Puntacana Championship which we will also get another shot at early next year. Hopefully, the next time around, we will get a little more coverage than what we saw this past week. It ended up being a pretty good event for me overall. Nine of my ten core players made it through the cut with Will Gordon being the only miss and my top five secondary players made it to the weekend overall. We got battered with our lower owned plays as one would expect in such a mixed field, but overall, it went surprisingly well.
In cash games, I managed to again make it over the cash line with a 4/6 roster. I elected again to go the route of punting with my lowest priced golfer and rostered Michael Gligic who had been playing well of late. I went in with the idea that there was a good chance that he would miss the cut, but dropped down for the benefit of freeing up those extra dollars so that I would have additional room to work a little higher on the board with players that I thought could contend. Unfortunately, Will Gordon also blew the cut which kept it from being an easy sweat over the weekend. I had higher hopes for him after a summer Top-5 finish, but he has not been able to duplicate that success again so I am at the point of watching and waiting to see what he does this fall and will likely only own him sparingly in GPP contests as he’s been more volatile over the last couple of months. The overall tee to green game is there, but his approach play and short game do not match his off the tee play so he’s going to have a hard time contending until he fixes at least one of those areas.
The rest of the team worked out well. Adam Schenk gave us a made cut, but not much else which is what his game has been much of the summer. Patrick Rodgers made a nice charge early and finished up strong on Sunday with an 11th place finish. Pat Perez started a little slowly, worked his way through the cut on Friday and then worked his way up to a 21st place finish which was okay, though not quite as good as we would hope for the price. Finally, Sam Burns was all over the place. He was in contention after his round on Friday, but then looked completely lost in shooting a bizarre 78 on Saturday before rallying back on Sunday to finish 28th. He was under 70 for three of four rounds so his round on Saturday was a head scratcher. All in all, the cash team worked out to make my week profitable overall. It always feels great to run through the gauntlet, especially in events like this where there is such a tricky field to deal with. I think it really speaks volumes to the tools and content that we available in how we are able to consistently have success in some of these below average fields.
