The Tour Championship finished up without a surprise finish, though JT and X gave it their best shot in trying to catch DJ over the last couple of rounds. Unfortunately, DJ was too locked in over the weekend and was not about to make any silly mistakes to give away the $15 million payday and FedEx Cup title. At the end of July, I never would have thought that DJ had it in him to get his game together after two miserable efforts in a row, but something sparked him over the last month (hello Brooks Koepka) and he played the best golf of his life from the PGA Championship through the Tour Championship as he finished 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 1st over his last four starts. When his game is in form, there really are not any other players in the world that are as good as DJ, even if there are moments where it seems like he is disengaged and does not look focused. I think DJ is just so good at staying in the moment that he does not carry any extra stress about the results of individual events. We are used to seeing so much emotion out of athletes that it is hard to reconcile DJ’s non-reaction to shooting an 80 or missing out on a major championship. We mistake it sometimes for apathy, but it turns out that DJ has figured out the best way to be successful on tour is to have no real memory about losses or even wins. Even when he wins, he never seems to let himself remain in the moment for too long.

As for the rest of the field, it went about as I thought it would for East Lake. JT and Xander both made a nice charge and in terms of the actual stroke play winner, Xander had the best score and I was informed by one of our subscribers that he receives the points for the OWGR as if he had actually won the tournament as opposed to DJ who finished 3rd by actual stroke play results.

The price on DJ forced me to make a decision of whether or not to go contrarian, be way overweight, but then not have many shares of others in contention or to load up on golfers that I thought could make a run to overtake him. Considering how rare it has been for the leader to close it out, I felt like the price was just too high for DJ and suspected that even if DJ won, there was a good chance that you could still win a GPP without having him on your roster. By the way it worked out for a whole group of FGI subscribers, skipping out on DJ was the right call as the biggest GPPs were won without DJ on the roster. We had one individual turn a $280 buy-in into over a $33k payday and his lineup would have tied for the win in the $25 GPP as well.
