Recap

Last week was fun, right? It has been a long time since we have dealt with that kind of carnage around the cut…though not really that much worse than the prior week or the rest of the season. When Friday’s round ended, only ~34% of teams in cash games had at least 4/6 or better moving on to the weekend. There was much heartache through the Slack Chat channel, but once it was known that even a good 3/6 team was still in play, it set us up for a fun weekend.

On the positive side, I nailed DJ as a 28-1 outright for the week, marking my third win of the season and the 7th in a row for our betting picks column, which is pretty impressive. We’ve been able to help put out a nice starting point to work off of each week so I really like the way we have these events read as a team. You can see the similarities in our thinking, but just enough differences to highlight a few different styles of play that work well for each event. We will likely not be seeing DJ at 28-1 for the rest of the year or maybe even for the next few years so it was great to see him close the deal, especially considering that the leaderboard was filled with a lot of random names up top.

In cash, I was able to easily win again and this time, it was with a 4/6 line. Brian Harman managed to miss two putts inside of two feet on Friday to miss the cut by…..you guessed it, two strokes. Some guys will go years without missing one putt like that and somehow it all fell apart on the greens for Harman on Friday. Justin Rose also missed the cut after a disastrous round on Friday. Everything had gone so well for Rose in his first nine rounds after the break, but nothing worked at all on Friday and he was a surprise MC for the week. The rest of my roster hung tough. Hovland was deep chalk and played well. Im made a birdie on the final hole to save his tournament on Friday, but did little more than score a few birdies over the weekend on his way to a 58th place finish. Ian Poulter also rolled over and played dead after making the cut on Friday so he added very little the last two rounds. Abraham Ancer did show up again and finished in 13th place. He was the key in cash games for me. For the second week in a row, a player coming off of a really high finish was low owned in cash the next week (superstition?) and it paid off to stick with him as he fared far better than many other cash plays that survived to the weekend.

As for the rest, it was a tough week. We owned DJ in GPP contests, but got so beat up overall with the player pool that none of my lineups were competitive. It was one of those weeks where about half of my player pool took the ax before the weekend with players like Rose, Woodland, Finau, Morikawa all missing the cut and then players like Niemann, Leishman, Sungjae and Poulter all sliding down the standings the final two rounds. Some weeks are going to be a struggle for the field. With so many players hitting their third week in a row after the break and with the stress around the tour of dealing with the virus and all of the testing, perhaps some of these players were just a little worn down over the weekend.
