Recap

The first week back was very hit and miss for us. Cash games were a battle from start to finish as two key chalk players went down in flames before the weekend with Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar missing the cut. Kuch was particularly painful as he had an extra shot of cushion going into the final hole on Friday before going into the water, making a double bogey and missing the cut by one shot. Webb looked rusty on Thursday and was unable to make a single birdie in his first round before rebounding slightly on Friday to play a more respectable round. It was disappointing from two players we would normally expect to be well prepared, but after three months off, everyone will have some challenges.

Ryan Palmer continued to be a boom or bust play at Colonial, where he is a member, as he missed the cut and never looked too competitive. It was a strange effort from a guy that had been playing well this season and who likely played even more practice rounds than normal at the course leading into the event. Kevin Na was his usual self. By usual, I mean he looked injured almost immediately, said he could hardly get out of bed on Friday and ended up missing the cut on a course he typically dominates. I am not sure if he was hurt during the first round or if he was (again!!!) dealing with back pain leading into the tournament, but if there was one player that would be hurt after three months off, it would have been a close race between Na and Louis. The other disappointment for the week was Harris English. He’s been great all season, had a nice track record at Colonial, but was never close to getting it into gear last week. The one thing I will mention is that after everyone owned him a week ago, most will dump those shares this week so this is not a bad spot to hold onto 5-10% of English as he will not be too heavily owned and should have a chance to rebound this week.

On the positive side, GPP action was much better for us as both Morikawa and Daniel Berger were core plays for us last week and we had a few folks that won five figure paydays in the $555 and Millionaire Maker as a result. Both of those golfers looked to be a great fit for Colonial and both had excellent form going into the break so it was not too much of a surprise that they were ready to go last week. We have been saying for a while that Berger looks healthy and refocused this season so it only felt like a matter of time before he found his way back into the winner’s circle. While the week had plenty of challenges, it was good to be back and we now have a slightly better view of what to expect moving ahead for the rest of the summer.
