Recap

The WGC FedEx St Jude started off a little rough, but got better by the day going to the weekend and then finishing up with a big win for Justin Thomas who fought through the last four holes in miraculous fashion to hold off a charging Brooks Koepka, pushing himself back into the #1 ranking in the world, overtaking Jon Rahm after just a couple of weeks. I love weeks when I have the winning golfer on my cash game team as it makes things so much easier to get a win and overcome a bad performance along the way (Ian Poulter). The nice part of the WGC fields is that you can be a little more aggressive than normal in cash games and pay up for a player like JT without having to worry about the cheaper golfers as there are always some quality players in the low $7k and upper $6k range to offset the cost. Last week, the key player for me was Chez Reavie, who was priced surprisingly low given his form and history at TPC Southwind. Had he just been able to putt without losing strokes, he would have won the tournament as his irons kept him out of trouble all weekend.

The rest of the leaderboard looked a little messy in the early stages for me for GPP action, but finished up really well by Sunday. I did not have Brooks which hurt as his form was so poor coming in and his press conference seemed ominous when discussing his knee, but we had exposure to a lot of the other players who finished strong for the week including: Webb Simpson, Daniel Berger, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Abraham Ancer, Brendon Todd and Joel Dahmen among others.

We did have some notable misses last week that hurt and kept me from seriously contending in any GPP action for the week. Jon Rahm played terrible just two weeks after looking so good and winning at Muirfield. I am not sure if it was just a hangover from his win, but it was concerning to see as outside of his win, he has not played that well since the re-start. Tyrell Hatton had an off week. Perhaps it was just an off week as he’s been incredible the rest of the season. It could have been one of those things where he just took his foot off the gas once he fell out of contention so I am not going to dwell on it too much. It did help to give us a nice price break this week so perhaps it is an opportunity to double down.

Tommy Fleetwood started slow, but put it together on Sunday for a nice finish for us. It was not quite an 8700 performance, but not terrible either. Sergio Garcia was in contention on Saturday afternoon, but then a triple bogey on the 11th hole wrecked his tournament and he never got back on track, making only three birdies over his last 25 holes. He finished 35th so it did not kill my cash team. Billy Horschel was solid for the week and gave us the 25th place finish we needed out of him. There was a little more room to run, but as long as he hit his floor, he contributed nicely to my cash team. Ian Poulter was the only true disappointment for me last week. He started poorly on Thursday, but fought back to end the round and played well on Friday. He had gotten back to even par on Saturday, but then fell apart and got especially sloppy on the last hole, manufacturing a double bogey out of nowhere to finish the round and then gave us nothing on Sunday, posting just a single birdie.
