Recap

Mexico was a mixed bag for me that ended up being negative by the end of the week. I felt great going into the weekend. With Rory, JT and Hideki all near the top of the leaderboard, it felt like I was closing in on my third outright win of the year. With those three in play, I would not have thought that all three would crumble over the final two rounds. Rory has such a funny way of looking unbeatable some rounds and then at other times, you wonder where the feeling of invincibility disappears to on the course. JT had the lead going into Sunday and it seemed like he would for sure be around at the end. Again, he struggled and was out of it by the middle of the final round. This was how most of my teams ended up for the week. Bryson blowing the lead late was the final punch to the gut as I had a decent amount of exposure to him, but not to Patrick Reed. I should have listened to the ‘Patrick Reed’ whisperer (Jeff), but I missed out on another one of his wins.

I went with a balanced lineup in my cash games and was not able to get across the finish line. Most of my golfers played well, but I could not get anyone up to the top of the board. Casey made a move on Sunday, but a late double bogey nixed that and kept him from getting the four round bonus. Xander started slow, rallied the last two rounds and finished well, but not in the Top-10. It was the same story for Tommy Fleetwood. I kept waiting for him to make his big weekend move, but it never came. He finished 18th, but in a no cut event, that does not move the needle. Carlos Ortiz worked out for me at $6600. He started off terribly and was +5 at one point in the first round before a three day rally got him to -7 and a 16th place finish. The disappointment of the week was Collin Morikawa. I need to stop playing him in these loaded fields. He’s a good player, but I keep passing up better players like Reed and Woodland and the upside has not been there so far. Though he is a west coast kid, he sure did struggle on the poa greens the last couple of weeks. It is so easy to fall for these new stars on tour and to forget about the more established names. His ill fated performance left me just a couple of points outside of the green for the week which was frustrating as it looked like I was going to get it done until the last hour of the day.
