RECAP
For the most part, the US Open went almost exactly as expected. Well, I did not have Bryson in player pool, so maybe not exactly as expected, but pretty close. Jeff made a great point in listening to Bryson’s take and it’s one I want to store away for the future. He talked about how when the fairways are wide, bombers dominate and when fairways are extremely narrow, bombers dominate. Bryson took the somewhat controversial approach at the beginning of the week to go out and use driver on nearly every hole possible rather than clubbing down to try to keep the ball in the fairway. His thought was that if everyone was going to miss the fairway more often that not, that he would rather take the extra distance he could get from his driver and have less work the rest of the way to the green since even those clubbing down were far from guaranteed to be playing from the short grass.
It was a really fantastic performance for Bryson who finished -6 for the week after predictions were abound earlier that nobody would finish under par. Bryson stuck to his game plan all the way to the end and while other players were close at times during the tournament, none could stay anywhere near him by the end on Sunday. The only good news for me in not owning him was that barely anyone else owned him as well so it did not crush me in any particular contest other than to keep me out of the winner’s circle for GPP contests.
Overall, the course played about exactly as I had anticipated. Thursday proved to be too easy, but by Friday, the USGA had managed to toughen things up and by the end, only Bryson finished below par. The cut held at +6 on Friday, but had a chance to fall as far as +7. Most of the players that I selected for my player pool fit the role of being able to hold ground, stay out of trouble and make pars. The only regrettable picks in my core were Collin Morikawa and Ty Hatton.
I was surprised at Morikawa’s struggles on Thursday when he cam out and fired a 76. Considering how others had played well, I would have expected him to be able to hold his own. On Friday, he looked like he would make the cut, but a double bogey on the back nine and trouble holding the line late left him one shot short. Ty Hatton delivered yet another terrible performance in a US major tournament where he’s been inconsistent during his career. He tends to be hotheaded when these really tough courses challenge him and sometimes it just takes a couple of bad holes for him to come undone. After the season he had, I was surprised that it happened to him again, but I can’t say it was totally unexpected.
On the positive side, we had core exposure to almost everyone else that finished near the top last week. Wolff, Oosty, Xander, Finau, DJ, Reed and Casey were all core guys and Hideki, English, Kokrak and Todd were secondary plays so I ended up with a lot of really strong lineups for the week given the price diversity among the group. I held to my theory that it would be a grind of a weekend and that guys like Paul Casey could be beneficial for us just by hammering out one par after another and holding ground. DJ snuck up on me with his finish. For most of the weekend, I was pretty disappointed in how he was playing and then all of a sudden on Sunday, there he was, finishing up in 6th place by shooting Even in the final round which vaulted him up 15 spots. Though fading Bryson kept me out of the big money for the week, I still had a real nice run in the GPP and other Single Entry contests I played for the week and turned a nice profit. While I am not the biggest fan of US Open style courses that frustrate me to no end, I did feel like the analysis we had was really sharp. Jeff deserves special credit for nailing his pick of Will Zalatoris last week. There were a couple people in the industry that brought him up, but if you owned him in GPP contests last week (roughly 6% owned in the MM), he opened up a lot of salary cap space for the rest of your roster and carried over everything we saw last season from him on the Korn Ferry Tour.
