Recap

The playoffs started last week in Boston and produced a wild tournament filled with incredible play by some and a lot of disappointment from others. When the last hole finished up, DJ stood tall, far above the rest of the field, winning by an amazing eleven strokes. It was a performance for the ages. He had to be disappointed to ‘only’ shoot a 60 on Friday after starting the round -11 thru 11 holes. However, DJ is one of those players that never really dwells on the highs or lows of golf and he came back over the weekend to shoot a 64-63 to finish at -30 on a course that is usually considered to be at least somewhat of a challenge.

For me, the week provided its own rollercoaster. My cash team started strong on Thursday, was pronounced dead (by me) after only 3/6 made it to the weekend, but then cashed rather easily on Sunday without near the sweat I was expecting. I did mention in the column last week that this tournament has a way of producing a lot of unexpected carnage and it definitely lived up to the billing. Jason Day, Tony Finau and Abraham Ancer all found the exit early and for the most part, were not that competitive overall. Day started off well enough, but was terrible on Friday and his iron play was really bad as he lost nearly 6.5 strokes over two rounds in SGAPP. Finau looked like he might make another late run for glory, but he three putted from 21 feet on the 15th hole on Friday, which ended his hopes. Ancer just is not the same player that he was for most of the season. His tee to green game has been fading, but seems officially gone now. The only area where he’s had much success of late is his putter and even that was garbage last week. He could bounce back, of course, but the trend is not very positive right now so I am going to abandon ship for now.

Fortunately, Kevin Kisner, Daniel Berger and Harris English played really well throughout the tournament and gave me a 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finish to get my cash game team into the green on Sunday. It was not the $60k payday that Jeff recorded, but my game revolves around the weekly grind so I’ll take it. That marks my fourth winning week in a row and I had some profits from GPP contests as well so it was another great week and I feel like things are very much on track headed into September and into the rest of major season.
