The Daily Spin – DraftKings Preview – AT&T Pebble Beach
Some weeks, the column leaps off of my fingertips and I’m in bed before midnight. Well, 2 or 3am, maybe. Other weeks, when the field is a little softer, it takes hours for me to labor over the player pool. Just tonight in trying to build my cash line I think I spent 2.5 hours trying to go through different lines and I still have not found one that fits my eye. With DJ withdrawing on Monday night, this event really opened up in terms of possibilities. It is both a joy and a pain. It’s pain in that I likely would have buckled and rolled DJ in cash this week had he showed up and then jumped into the $7k range to fill the rest with everyone else. It’s joy in that now there are a lot more ways to build a cash line which means that we will not see a 70-80% owned DJ, but it also gets complicated since there are not a lot of compelling value plays for cash games in the lower range. We had options last week down to James Hahn at $6800, but there really are not really any standouts on the low end this week.
We are entering a great stretch of golf here over the next month….starting in a week. It is a shame that we do not get a better field for this event, though I think much of that usually has to do with the fact most of the top golfers generally like to avoid Pro Am events (no Pro Am this year due to COVID) with a bunch of different courses, and it is also a natural week to take off with a loaded field next week at Riviera followed by the first WGC event of the season the following week in Florida which leads us up to some really fun events in March including the Match Play event and the Players Championship. Also, Pebble Beach can be cold, wet and rainy this time of year which seems to be the case this weekend with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees. Most players do not like putting up with that sort of weather unless it revolves around playing for The Open Championship.
Announcements
Be sure to tune in to Sirius/XM Fantasy Sports Channel today between 1-3pm for the Fantasy Sports Writers Association (FSWA) awards announcements. Both Jeff and myself have received nominations for Golf Writer of the Year so we’re very excited to hear if either of us will be taking home some hardware. Jeff won the award for his work back in 2015, but this marks my first nomination.
If you are new to us this week as we had many folks join us this past week after the NFL season came to an end, please be sure to join our Slack chat. Go to the PGA Tools tab, drop down to the bottom to ‘Join FGI Slack’ and enter your e-mail address and you will be all set. The Slack chat has been a game changer for our community over the last 15 months or so as we have a really skilled group of subscribers that truly enjoy DFS and are also really incredible about sharing strategies and talking about specific players and ideas. I’ve been really happy with the way things have developed as folks are really easy to get along with and about the only ribbing that goes on is to make fun of Mr Polski’s Bears when inevitably screw up at the QB position.
*Note – On Slack chat, be sure to join each of the channels. When you join, it starts you in the #general. Be sure to join #current-pga-event, #support, #feature-request, #euro-tour, #pga-championship, #nfl, #mma
Also, be sure to download the Slack App so you can be mobile and chat with us from anywhere!
Most of the talk takes place in the #current-pga-event room during the week so if you’ve only been in the general room and wondering where everyone is at, click on ‘Channels’ on the left side of the screen and that should bring up the list of available channels to join. We have been very strong this past year with his MMA picks so be sure to stop by each Saturday to check out our work. UFC 258 is this Saturday night so there will be plenty of discussion centered around that card as the weekend approaches and then for much of the day on Saturday leading up to lineup lock. It’s just one more free perk that we offer to add value to your subscription throughout the year.
Also, if you guy enjoy the podcast each week, please help us out with a review. It would mean so much if you could take a few minutes to write us a positive review and share the show with others. In such a crowded industry, every little bit helps so a bunch of 5 star ratings and a few reviews would be great to see to end our week.
