Recap

I did not think we were going to get out alive at PGA National after Thursday. Two of my core cash game plays, Byeong Hun An and Billy Horschel got off to poor starts and it looked like once again, the Honda Classic would be a long weekend. Fortunately, when Friday got underway, my fortunes turned around quickly and by the time the cut line was established, we were looking at a winning week for certain with a few GPP teams with some potential.

Like I mentioned in my column last week, I always tell myself to go light at PGA National. It is really tough course and with the winds in play, scoring will be at a premium and there will be landmines all over the place to avoid. Notable names like Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose were some of the bigger names not to make the weekend. Of course, once Wednesday night hit, I kept looking at my research and felt great and knew I was going to play just as much as I do every week. The one change I made to my strategy was to build two cash game teams which is unusual for me as I am usually a single bullet type of guy. In looking at the winds late night on Wednesday, it looked to me like the PM/AM wave of players would have an advantage so I put together a cash roster full of Thursday PM tee times. It looked like that might be the one that would cash, but with Benny An’s rally on Friday, my original cash line ended up 6/6 while my PM/AM line went 5/6 (Russell Knox screwed us again) and both easily cashed for the week.

On the GPP side, I had one team in the $5 that made a nice run late in the day. The difference between finishing around 240th vs winning the GPP was Harry Higgs shooting +7 in the final round where the winning team had Russell Henley in its last lineup spot who played great over the weekend. Oh if only the lineup generator could have just made that one change for me….

Overall, it was a successful week. Anytime I get out of the Honda with a profit, I feel great about it. That is as tough of a course as we are going to see all season long. The Florida stretch is always a little tricky compared to other parts of the season since so much is weather dependent and there is so much trouble on all of the courses so that it only takes one bad hole and your weekend can be over. While Torrey Pines is tough, there are not a lot of triples out there unless you do something crazy. In Florida, all it takes is a water ball on a Par 3 and the nightmare begins. This week is less painful than the last, but with two tough courses ahead, we have our work cut out for us, but just keep in mind, we are only about a month away from Masters week.
