What an interesting week we have had so far. Some of the North Carolina narratives have played out really well while the most obvious ones like Webb Simpson, Bill Haas and Carl Petterson (an easily avoided landmine here) struggled to play their best game. With the weather delaying play, much of the morning was wiped out due to delays which left us at a point where the second round was not completed by sunset.

What that means for us is that tomorrow morning is going to be a very important time to be awake and paying close attention to what is going on. Play will resume tomorrow morning at 7:30am EST. Lineup lock for the weekend contests is scheduled for 9:50am EST. It looks like the last guys that need to finish the second round are on the 10th hole so we are probably looking at it taking two hours to complete what is left.

Currently, there are 80 players at +1 or better for the cut line. The winds are going to be a factor with steady state winds at 10mph to start the day and gusts up to 20mph. As the morning wears on, the winds will pick up so that by early afternoon, they are expected to hit 15-16mph with gusts up to 28 mph at around 2pm with those gusts hovering around 25 mph for most of the afternoon. Expect scoring conditions to continue to be difficult.

It seems very unlikely at this point that the cut will move up to Even or down to +2 at this point. There are 57 players at Even or better which means that 13 players would have to improve up to Even in order to move the line up to E. With 80 players at +1 or better, eleven of the 33 remaining players on the course would have to fall to +2 or worse to move the line down. There are seven players at +1 and six at Even so it is not impossible, but highly unlikely.

What we do need to worry about is the distinct possibility of an MDF (Made cut Did not Finish). If MORE than 78 players make the cut, there is an additional cut after the 3rd round back down to the Top-70 and ties. I know that is redundant for some of you out there, but there are always a few new folks to educate and it is really important this week.

This makes a big difference with strategy for weekend golf. The addition of an MDF means that we now cannot simply pick any players near the bottom of the leaderboard with the hope of savings salary cap space and knowing that they will have two guaranteed rounds. It will definitely play into your hands to use this to your advantage.

First off, be awake in the morning to see how the second round ends. There will be enough people who make the mistake of not watching that you will gain an immediate advantage. Make sure you have lineups in place with golfers who MAKE the cut. The next piece of strategy gets back to how we attack the first two rounds of events. Do we want to use players on the low end who are close to the MDF line? I would argue for GPP play that there is a real opportunity to gain an advantage over your opponents by utilizing a few of these players. Now, it may not make much difference and if Webb Simpson and Bill Haas each blow the cut, but people are going to stay away from these two even if they rally back to make the cut so there is some game theory to consider for some of these players. Even though each guy has underperformed, we know that both are capable of better rounds and they will each have the best tee times…..if they make it through the cut.
