The Daily Spin – DraftKings Daily Fantasy Golf Weekend Edition – The Players Championship

Through two rounds of golf we have a very unusual leaderboard as we move towards the weekend. The big names have largely floundered with Jordan Spieth missing the cut and DJ, Rory and Rickie getting through, but all nine shots behind the current leaders, Louis Oosthuizen and Kyle Stanley. In terms of DraftKings results, nearly 40% of teams in GPP contests this week went 6/6. In the last two years, The Players Championship has been one of the toughest events for getting players through the cut with any sort of predictability. However, this week, we ended up with the chalkiest week of the season and in all honesty, I am surprised that the 6/6 percentage was not even higher considering the names that are still in the field. What is going to be exciting is when the leaderboard flips on its head the next two days as the best players in the world are far from finished with this tournament

Last week was the perfect example of what we have seen over and over with weekend golf. Dustin Johnson started slowly, made the cut on the number, then roared back to life and nearly won the tournament. It’s tempting going into moving day to look to the top of the leaderboard to lock in the players who have looked good the first two rounds, but unless you believe that the winning score is going to be -16 to -18, the golfers leading this week will more than likely not be the leading point scorers over the weekend. The keys to remember when making your decisions is to look at the four key factors we look at each week: 1) weather conditions 2) current position versus current odds 3) course history 4) key stats

In looking at the weather for tomorrow, the winds are projected to pick up slightly from morning to afternoon, but the range on that is from 9-13 mph, hardly anything to worry about in terms of a change. Rains are expected, particularly around the middle of the day and there is the possibility of lightning throughout the day. All things considered, the earlier tee times look to have a slight advantage over those later in the day. This should line up well with our current position versus current odds chart as most of the players with the biggest discrepancies are teeing off earlier in the day.

In terms of player who were expected to do well, but have so far struggled, it’s definitely a group of A-list guys for the week. With players like DJ, Rory, Rickie and Justin Rose all struggling early, there are going to be at least a few players in position to work their way up the leaderboard all weekend. Although the afternoon players made a nice run to close the second round, the leaderboard is still tight enough so that two good rounds by a player can easily get them back into the mix. With the way the course played in the first two rounds, I am thinking that the folks in charge of the course will not go out of their way to make the course play that much more difficult the way they did last year before the third rounds so my hope is that there are still some big rounds left out there to be had.

For the key stats this week, now that the cut has been established, we can focus on players who are still around and can score a lot of birdies. If you were nervous about a player like Brooks Koepka at the start of the week, fear not any longer. All of the best players in the world are here and almost all of them are excellent in terms of scoring a lot of birdies so while there are a lot of weeks where we really do not have a lot of players outside of the top couple of golfers to choose from in terms of scoring ability, almost all of the top guys made the cut and are still around which should make the weekend contests wide open this week.
