It looks like we found ourselves a US Open course after all, just a couple of months too late. We knew the course was going to be more challenging this week, but I am not sure anyone was ready for this….well, we knew Hideki was ready. Fortunately, most of our guys managed to stagger their way through the cut with the exceptions of Phil Mickelson, Daniel Berger and Thomas Pieters who really looked like he could not wait to get off the course as darkness fell and ended play a little before everyone could complete their round. What is exciting about looking at the leaderboard at this point is that almost everyone who is even reasonably close to par is still alive. Of course, if Hideki goes into full on robot mode these last two rounds as he is more than capable of doing, we could end up watching a reply of what we witness in Akron a week ago.

While there was some pain in the early rounds, those who hung around and watched the cut line slide back to +5 were give a little bit of hope as several key names appear to have survived. I say appeared due to the fact that the second round has not officially ended at this point. There are still a couple of players left on the course that could change things so the number does have a chance to move back to +4. Right now, there are 69 players at +4 or better and only two players are currently left at +5, one is at +4 and two are at +6. From the look of shot tracker, Hudson Swafford is about to fall back to +6 which will leave Bernd Wiesberger at +5 with three holes to go including the Par 5, 7th hole so stay tuned as this cut line is far from settled.

What this means for us is that we need to be a little bit careful with who we roster as things could get really ugly if we roll the dice with a few players at +5 only to wake up tomorrow morning to see them packing their bags for the airport. It’s one of those areas where there is a little extra risk, but also potential reward as there will be less people rostering players close to the line which could make for a nice GPP opportunity if you are playing a lot of lineups.

As always, the first thing that we want to look at for our weekend players is to see how the weather is looking going into tomorrow. When I looked over the weather on Tuesday night, it looked like weather would be a factor throughout the weekend and that seems to be the case in looking at tomorrow and Sunday. There is about a 50% chance of rain all day tomorrow although the winds will continue to be light and not too difficult to deal with. We just don’t know at what point conditions will be at its worst or who will have a big advantage in play. In these situations, I just stick to my regular mix of players and hope for the best. With weather, sometimes that is all that you can do.

In terms of player types, we want the same sort of players that were attractive at the start of the tournament…primarily big hitters off the tee or incredible iron players from longer distances. There are not a lot of birdies to be had on this course so scoring will be at a premium this weekend. A couple of extra birdies could make all the difference between a substantial payday or just making it into the money
