The Daily Spin – DraftKings Daily Fantasy Golf Preview Weekend Edition – John Deere Classic
Well, the love affair with Danny Lee came crashing down on Thursday as he reverted back to his withdrawing ways and pulled out of an event where he looked like a ‘can’t miss’ pick. Unfortunately, if we’ve learned anything about DFS golf, it is that there are NO ‘can’t miss’ players in golf in any tournament. Unfortunately, health issues are one of those things in golf that we just do not get enough details on ahead of time so it is almost always a huge surprise when they occur. Fortunately, we did get some rallies from a few key players today and the cut line did not move to -3 which would have wiped away a couple of additional golfers.
Now we have to focus our attention on the weekend. The final couple of players on the course really changed the way that we will need to approach it over the next two days. Initially, it looked like we might be able to avoid the MDF as it appeared that there were going to be exactly 70 players to make that cut. However, a late Michael Kim bogey saved everyone at -2 and pushed 82 players through the cut which means that we will be facing a secondary cut tomorrow where the Top-70 players and ties will make it to the final round. What this means to us is that we have to avoid any and all MDFs tomorrow as it destroys weekend rosters. You can take a risk on one or two players near the bottom of the board as there are a couple of very good players that do have the potential to move up a lot this week from 70th place. However, I think that a few of these guys are also going to fall apart and be done by tomorrow afternoon so if we can get a little more of a cushion by using guys a couple of strokes above the initial cut line, I think it makes a lot of sense overall.
Another reason why I don’t think we need to chase the extreme value this week is that this is the John Deere Classic. In most events during the season where players make it into minus double digits by Friday, I am usually hesitant to go after them as weekend players. However, with the JDC, we know that the scoring output is far from over. Patrick Rodgers is at -14 now, but we have seen the winning score at this event dip all the way down to -22 and potentially lower in recent years so I do not think we have to worry as much this week about players near the top falling back like the vast majority of other events. Also, the weather for tomorrow looks perfect. Winds are not going to be a factor, rain and storms are not going to be a factor so the conditions should be perfect all day for players to continue right where they left off on Friday afternoon, peppering the course with birdies and some potential eagles. Since there is no real advantage to one wave of players over the other, feel free to load up throughout the day on the best names available.
