The Daily Spin – DraftKings Daily Fantasy Golf Preview Weekend Edition – FedEx St Jude Classic
Apparently, Rickie Fowler decided to just use the FedEx St Jude as a warm up event after all. After playing lifelessly for 27 holes, we did see a glimpse of his game on the back nine before he bowed out. I think he is definitely in play next week so perhaps the extra days of rest and potential practice at Erin Hills will do him some good as he prepares for the US Open. Overall, there were not many players up top that laid down for the week. Francesco Molinari and Adam Scott started a little slow, but each roared back strongly today. Phil and Brooks played exactly as expected and only Russell Henley was a true no-show among the other upper tier players which is a bit concerning as it is the second event in a row where he has been absolutely blown off the course. In terms of our value plays, JB Holmes put together a monster round today to get back into the mix and Peter Uihlien and Danny Lee made it through by the skin of their teeth. The most obvious play of the week, Charl Schwartzel, whose price was absurd in this field, is leading the pack along with Chez Reavie and follow by Stewart Cink in 4th place. We have a lot of strong plays in the mix despite a few unfortunate misses so hopefully, you have some things in play going into the weekend.
However, if JT Poston, Russell Henley and Rickie Fowler gutted your rosters by the time the cut rolled around, we still have some time to get things back on track with the weekend contests that are available. Now that there are some big names in contention, I do not expect any of them to lay down with the chance to win a tournament in front of them. The leaderboard is very tight as we hit moving day so there are a lot of potential outcomes for the tournament.
In looking at a few key variables for the weekend, the first thing that we need to talk about is the fact that the dreaded MDF is in play this week. As MORE THAN 78 players made the cut (86), there is a fairly substantial cut looming tomorrow where they will play down to the Top-70 and ties to get a smaller field in place for Sunday. Typically, my eyes are always drawn to those good players that are right on the cut line going into the weekend, but this week, you should understand that there is a little more risk than normal in starting these golfers. Of course, in past events, players have fallen from all over the board to hit the MDF wall so do not go out of your way to avoid players based upon where they are in the standings. You just need to hope that golfers like Danny Lee and Peter Uihlein can play up to their normal level and have the big weekend that they should for this event.
A quick check of the weather reveals no advantage at all in terms of tee times. Winds are going to hover around 8-10 mph for the whole weekend. No rain or storms are expected either so there are really no true advantages to stacking tee times this week at all.
In terms of looking at who is expected to rise the most based upon current position versus current odds, take a look at the chart below to get an idea of who we are likely to see a surge from over the next couple of days.
