Wells Fargo Championship Preview:

The PGA TOUR heads to Charlotte, North Carolina for the Wells Fargo Championship this week where Quail Hollow Club resumes its regular hosting duties after last season’s event was canceled due to the pandemic.  The other time it took a year off was a couple of years ago when it was being prepped for its duty as host of the 2017 PGA Championship.  After the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship, we saw the effects of the renovated course layout.  The Quail Hollow Club is the longest par 71 on the PGA TOUR measuring 7,521 yards in length and thus caters more to the big hitters.  Overall, tee-to-green specialists will likely play well this week but leaders in both SG: Off-The-Tee and SG: Putting will be the ones threatening to win.  There is a significant advantage with distance and accuracy off the tee which especially comes into play when looking for scoring opportunities on the three par 5s and the closing three holes, known as the Green Mile.  Lastly, Mother Nature will not be much of a factor this week with warm and mostly sunny conditions in the forecast and minimal impactful winds.

Recommended Bets for the Wells Fargo Championship:

To Win Outright (E/W 1/4 1-2-3-4-5)

Viktor Hovland – 22/1:  Viktor Hovland must be taken into consideration to win the Wells Fargo Championship this week.  His T3 finish last week at the Valspar Championship clearly shows that his game is in great shape right now.  Hovland’s ball striking should prove to be a huge advantage at Quail Hollow Club and although he lacks experience here, it should surprise no one if he is in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Cameron Tringale – 50/1:  Cameron Tringale has been playing some quality golf recently which includes a T3 finish at the Valspar Championship last week along with a T9 finish at the Valero Texas Open and a T13 finish at The Honda Classic prior to that.  His game is being powered by a balanced tee-to-green game and great putting, an ideal combination for Quail Hollow Club.  Tringale’s incoming form and course knowledge sets himself to be in the mix again in Charlotte, North Carolina which is why he is an intriguing each-way bet at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Russell Henley – 66/1:  Russell Henley’s 2021 season began on a high note when he finished T11 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.  A missed cut at The American Express can easily be overlooked as he had excellent outings at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and The Genesis Invitational shortly after.  Same thing goes for his missed cut at THE PLAYERS Championship as he went on to finish T3 at The Honda Classic the following week and then T9 at the RBC Heritage.  If his 2021 form has told us anything so far, it is that last week’s missed cut at the Valspar Championship is nothing to fret about as a quality bounce back should be in order at the Wells Fargo Championship.  That is why Henley seems underestimated and offers excellent each-way value after the bigger names to win at Quail Hollow Club.

Emiliano Grillo – 70/1:  Emiliano Grillo will tee it up at the Wells Fargo Championship after a bizarre missed cut at the Valspar Championship last week.  Prior to that his game was impressive shape as exhibited by a T2 finish at the RBC Heritage and T9 finish at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.  Grillo does not mind the challenging golf test at Quail Hollow Club as confirmed by his T9 finish in 2018.  He is solid tee-to-green and if he gets hot with his putter, then he could get into the mix again in Charlotte, North Carolina which is why he is an intriguing each-way bet at the Wells Fargo Championship this week.

Recommended “One And Done” Golfer for the Wells Fargo Championship:

Jon Rahm:  Jon Rahm is in a great spot in Charlotte, North Carolina and makes for an outstanding “One And Done” selection for the Wells Fargo Championship.  His overall form has been fantastic since he began his 2021 campaign which includes a T9 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T5 finish at the Masters last time out in stroke play.  Now the powerful Spaniard gets to play on a course that should suit his game more now than ever.  Rahm is an elite ball striker and got a feel for Quail Hollow Club at the 2017 PGA Championship when he finished T58.  That should prove to be beneficial this time around as he looks to get back in the win column and ramp up for the 2021 PGA Championship in a couple of weeks.

Wells Fargo Championship WDs as of 5/4/2021:  Brendon Todd, Camilo Villegas, Jim Herman, Davis Love III, Charles Howell III

Wells Fargo Championship Market Leaders:

Justin Thomas leads the Wells Fargo Championship field in salaries with a hefty $12.3k salary.  He has been on a nice run of golf recently that includes a win at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T13 finish at the Valspar Championship last week where his putter held him back from being in serious contention.  JT should keep his outstanding tee-to-green game going at Quail Hollow Club as he will certainly have positive memories here as this was the site of his 2017 PGA Championship victory.

Jon Rahm slots in next $200 cheaper at $12,100.  His overall form has been fantastic since he began his 2021 campaign which includes a T9 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T5 finish at the Masters last time out in stroke play.  Now the powerful Spaniard gets to play on a course that should suit his game more now than ever.  Rahm should not be underestimated to go well this week at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, Webb Simpson, Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau round out the $11k salary tier and all are in play for quality fantasy performances at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Recommended golfers for the Wells Fargo Championship for both Cash games and GPPs:

Jon Rahm – $12,100:  Jon Rahm is in a smash spot in Charlotte, North Carolina and makes for an outstanding DFS selection for the Wells Fargo Championship.  His overall form has been fantastic since he began his 2021 campaign which includes a T9 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T5 finish at the Masters last time out in stroke play.  Now the powerful Spaniard gets to play on a course that should suit his game more now than ever.  Rahm is an elite ball striker and gained valuable experience at the revamped Quail Hollow Club in 2017 during the PGA Championship.  That should prove to be advantageous this time around as he looks to get back in the win column before the next PGA Championship in a couple of weeks.

Viktor Hovland – $11,500:  Viktor Hovland must be taken into consideration to win the Wells Fargo Championship this week.  His T3 finish last week at the Valspar Championship clearly shows that his game is in great shape right now.  Hovland’s ball striking should prove to be a massive advantage at Quail Hollow Club that caters to big hitters.  His lack of experience here should go unnoticed and it should surprise no one if he is in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Also consider:

Justin Thomas – $12,300

Bryson DeChambeau – $11,900

Xander Schauffele – $11,700

Webb Simpson – $11,400

Tony Finau – $11,000

Corey Conners – $10,800:  Corey Conners will be teeing it up in Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship after a T21 finish at the Valspar Championship last week.  Prior to that he finished T4 finish at the RBC Heritage, T8 at the Masters and T14 at the Valero Texas Open.  Conners should be feeling confident about his game and get out of the gates quickly at Quail Hollow Club, a course that he is getting more comfortable at.  He has an excellent tee-to-green game and that will be necessary to get in the mix in this event.  Expect the Canadian to keep his momentum going and hopefully put up another quality finish.

Max Homa – $10,200:  Max Homa arrives in Charlotte, North Carolina for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship in great form and is coming off a T6 at the Valspar Championship.  He also has another recent top 10 finishes coming at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and won the The Genesis Invitational back in mid-February.  He is clearly on top of his game right now and the Quail Hollow Club is a course that Homa has had some previous success at.  His win back in 2019 shows that when he is in form, he can go well here.  With a FanDuel salary priced at just $10,200, Homa is a nice value option for your lineups.

Cameron Tringale – $10,100:  Cameron Tringale should get plenty of DFS consideration at the Wells Fargo Championship as he is on a great run of golf that includes a T13 finish at The Honda Classic, a T9 finish at the Valero Texas Open and a T3 finish at the Valspar Championship last week.  Quail Hollow Club must be to his liking as he will be making his ninth appearance here.  Tringale is slightly underrated in this field and should be an easy fit for many DFS lineups this week.

Also consider:

Will Zalatoris – $10,700

Joaquin Niemann – $10,500

Keegan Bradley – $9,900:  Keegan Bradley has every chance to go well this week at the Wells Fargo Championship after being in contention all last week at the Valspar Championship where he ultimately finished in solo 2nd place.  His past poor performances at Quail Hollow Club should probably be overlooked because his ball striking is on another level right now.  Bradley rates as one of the better golfers in SG: OTT and SG: APP in the large 156 man field this week at the Wells Fargo Championship and that alone should get him to the weekend and hopefully threatening to win once again.

Russell Henley – $9,800:  Russell Henley will tee it up at the Wells Fargo Championship after an untimely missed cut at the Valspar Championship last week.  If his 2021 form has told us anything so far, it is that a quality bounce back should be in order in Charlotte, North Carolina this week.  Specifically, Henley had decent outings at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and The Genesis Invitational shortly after a missed cut at The American Express and same thing goes when he finished T3 at The Honda Classic and then T9 at the RBC Heritage after missing the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship.  That is why Henley seems underestimated at Quail Hollow Club where he has been gaining valuable course knowledge at since the 2017 PGA Championship overhaul.

Emiliano Grillo – $9,600:  Emiliano Grillo will tee it up at the Wells Fargo Championship after a bizarre missed cut at the Valspar Championship last week. He is solid tee-to-green and if he gets hot with his putter, then he could get into the mix again in Charlotte, North Carolina which is why he is an intriguing DFS play at the Wells Fargo Championship this week.

Also consider:

Harold Varner III – $9,400

Matt Jones – $9,200

Kyle Stanley – $8,400:  Kyle Stanley displayed good form last week at the Valspar Championship when he finished T39 and was even better a few weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open when he finished T14.  Overall, he has made 12 of 18 cuts this season and looks primed to make another this week at the Wells Fargo Championship.  Stanley clearly feels comfortable the Quail Hollow Club as shown by his T13 finish back in 2018 and T8 finish in 2019.  Price at a mere $8.4k on FanDuel, Stanley makes for a respectable value play given his recent form and course experience.

Also consider:

Aaron Wise – $8,700

Jhonattan Vegas – $8,400

“FanDuel $7k Special” for the Wells Fargo Championship:

Robert Streb – $7,300:  Robert Streb recently finished T52 at the RBC Heritage and T13 at The Honda Classic which shows that his game is in good enough shape for the demanding test at Quail Hollow Club this week.  He has had decent success here when he has made the weekend highlighted by a T4 finish back in 2015.  If your DFS lineup requires you to dip into the lower $7k range over on FanDuel for the Wells Fargo Championship, Streb is a golfer to take under advisement.

“FanDuel Fade” for the Wells Fargo Championship:

Note: This golfer is my personal fade this week.

Rickie Fowler – $9,500Rickie Fowler will be a DFS fade for me at the Wells Fargo Championship as his recent form has not reflected a $9k salary yet.  In particular, he has not had a top 10 finish in 2021 and when you are in his range over on FanDuel you are hoping for that kind of upside.  Fowler has had some previous success at Quail Hollow Club but that came when he was one of the top golfers in the world.  There are simply safer alternatives within his salary range over on FanDuel and should only be considered a speculative GPP play.

Good luck.
