The Sony Open in Hawaii is the first full-field event of the 2019 portion of the PGA TOUR season, and 23 golfers from the Sentry Tournament of Champions field last week will tee it up in Honolulu, Hawaii.  That recently has been something important to identify because the previous five winners of this event all played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua the week prior.  In fact, over the last 20 years, 14 winners of the Sony Open in Hawaii played in both events.

The Waialae Country Club has been the venue of the Sony Open in Hawaii since the event’s inception in 1965, but more recently started being played as a par 70 course in 1999.  Winds off the shore can influence scoring, but the current forecast only calls for light winds between 5-10 mph all four days with a minimal chance of rain.  Measuring at just 7,044 yards, there should be plenty of scoring opportunities and once again prove to be one of the easiest par 70 courses on the PGA TOUR.  With driving distance and accuracy not being much of a requirement, the Waialae Country Club is a typical “second shot golf course” that demands accurate approach shots that lands the ball close to the pin.  A hot putter will also be necessary in order to contend here.
