Sentry Tournament of Champions Preview: 

 

The Sentry Tournament of Champions kicks off the 2020 portion of the PGA TOUR season in Maui, Hawaii.  This limited-field event with no cut only features winners from the PGA TOUR’s previous calendar year.  Officially 34 golfers will tee it up this week after Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Francesco Molinari, C.T. Pan, Justin Rose, Tiger Woods all qualified but have elected not to compete.  The Plantation Course at Kapalua is the regular host and will play as the only par 73 on the PGA TOUR.  It has been freshly renovated and with new tee boxes it has been lengthened slightly to 7,596 yards.  The wide fairways should present plenty of scoring opportunities along with the extra Par 4.  The golfers who can get off to a fast start during the relatively calm opening round should prove to be difficult to chase down over the weekend if they can control their ball flight in the windier conditions.  Typically, the Plantation Course rewards big hitters, but as Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson and even Steve Stricker have all shown, winning here does not always require distance off the tee.  A hot putter over four rounds will absolutely be necessary to win here though, so those showing little rust with their short game should be in contention come Sunday.
