The Farmers Insurance Open will mark the 2019 season debut for a few more golfers this week, but none more notable than Tiger Woods.  After a year of rapidly rising through the Official World Golf Rankings, Tiger’s 2018 season culminated with his 80th PGA Tour victory at the TOUR Championship.  Now once again healthy and in even better shape than a year ago, Tiger arrives in La Jolla, California ready to contend.  Afterall, he has won the Farmers Insurance Open seven times and the Torrey Pines South Course was the venue of his last major championship – the 2008 U.S. Open.

The Farmers Insurance Open is played on both the North and South Courses over the opening rounds before the South Course fully takes over for the final rounds of competition.  Even though 54 holes are played at the South Course, it is important for golfers to have a good round at the North Course if they want to contend.  An interesting trend to follow once again this year will be if the winner starts on the South Course and finishes on the North Course, as did the previous eight winners of this event.

The South Course is a mammoth par 72 measuring at 7,698 yards, which makes it the longest on the PGA TOUR.  It is one of the most difficult courses these golfers will play on all year because it is extremely demanding off the tee.  Errant tee shots will be awaited by thick rough that will blow-up a scorecard very quickly.  Golfers will need to keep their ball in play if they want any chance of playing meaningful golf on Sunday.  Finally, weather typically plays a major factor in this event, but the current forecast looks very manageable.  Temps will be a little chilly in the morning, but steadily rise to the upper 60s in the afternoon.  There is virtually no chance of rain all four rounds and winds are not expected to peak above 11 mph.
