Well, that did not take long. In only his second start of the 2017-2018 PGA TOUR season, Patrick Cantlay became a PGA TOUR winner at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. This was truly a remarkable feat for Patrick Cantlay who just returned to the PGA TIOUR last season after missing almost four years due to a lower back injury. He was a staple of this column last season while his FanDuel salary was severely discounted and even though he was finally in the $9K range last week, we did not shy away from playing him in our lineups and he came through big time. Patrick Cantlay’s comeback story is truly incredible and I hope he continues to find success on the golf course throughout his professional career.
The PGA TOUR travels south of the border this week to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. The OHL Classic at Mayakoba will be played at the El Camaleon GC as it has for many years now so it will be important to analyze the course history and identify what types of golfers have found success here. FanDuel is sharper with their salaries this week but there are a few golfers that still have a lot of value in their salaries. FanDuel’s pricing algorithm is sometimes slow to react to golfers who are in good form so it would be smart to take advantage of this before it catches up.
The El Camaleon GC is another par 71 measuring a shade below 7,000 yards. It is a Greg Norman designed course and has not played too difficult over the years. There should be plenty of scoring opportunities if you can keep the ball in play from tee to green. The big hitters do not have their typical advantage with length off the tee because driving accuracy and a sharp long game are more of a premium here. In fact, this is a course where the shorter hitters have a realistic shot at winning and was none more so evident two years ago when Graeme McDowell beat Russell Knox and Jason Bohn in a playoff. The wind also usually plays a factor at the El Camaleon GC so the golfers that can control their ball flight will have the best shot at contending come Sunday afternoon.
The FGI PGA Model is going to assist us with our lineup building process because it identifies the best golfers with solid Current Form and whose Key Stats set up nicely for the El Camaleon GC. It also allows us to factor in Course History as well as an emphasis on Vegas (odds to win).
