Sunday Showdown – The Masters
We are headed to Sunday at Augusta and so far, this tournament has not let us down. 18 months after one of the most epic match play battles ever at Hazeltine between Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed, they will meet again in the final pairing with a green jacket on the line. Reed leads by three strokes and has shot below 70 in all three rounds, but Rory looked strong down the stretch, saving par on 17 before getting a great bounce off his tee shot on 18 and then converting a long birdie putt to tighten things up. Scoring conditions were perfect for all but a few minutes late in the afternoon when the rains picked up briefly, but the moisture on the greens made them much easier to score on than normal and with some of the shot making that took place, we witness three golfers post rounds of 65 (Rahm, Fowler, McIlroy) and a round of 66 from Tommy Fleetwood. While Tiger is out of the mix going into Sunday along with Phil Mickelson, the rest of the leaderboard is as good as I can remember in my lifetime. The pairings tomorrow are going to be incredible and while it feels like the tournament will be decided by the last two groups, there is still plenty of action ahead and we have seen crazy things happen on Sunday when the pressure is on.
This week also marks some new contests for DraftKings who have decided to curtail its normal weekend contests (inexplicably) in favor of single round contests. We are still not sure if it is their intention to run four single day events each week or if it will be like it was this week with Friday, Saturday and Sunday as single rounds and since they kept things under wraps until we inquired about it on Thursday night, we are still coordinating a plan of attack for how to provide coverage. We will definitely continue to provide full coverage for the normal weekend contests as FanDuel added those this past week. If you are disappointed with DK, realize that the format still exists through FanDuel so you do have options. Let DK know about your dissatisfaction, but also come on over to FanDuel where we have already received approval starting next week to run a 75 player FGI Weekend Contest.

I have a lot to say about the new daily contests in general for DraftKings, but much of that will be saved for the podcast and for my column next week. I am a little cautious about attacking these contests with reckless abandon as I think that in most events, projecting performance for a single round is much more difficult than four or even two rounds and I do believe that it will cut into our edge to some degree. The idea to always keep in mind for these contests is whether or not we still have enough of an edge in a contest to offset the cost of the rake. If we still have an edge, than being able to play it as often as possible is the way to go. However, if our edge slips to a degree that the cost to play outweighs our edge, then the game is unprofitable for anyone playing and should generally be avoided. I think there are some definite areas this week where we still have a substantial edge so that if you are even considering trying out single round contests, this is the week to do it.
