Stat Boy’s Weekend Warriors – Safeway Open

By Erik Dantoft

Safeway Open Leaderboard Heading into the Weekend:

After missing the cut at THE NORTHERN TRUST last time out, Sam Burns was hoping to get his 2020-21 PGA TOUR season started in the right direction.  Well, Burns has done exactly that so far at the Safeway Open when he shot a round one 8-under 64 at Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course and followed that up with a 7-under 65 in round two.  Burns will enter the weekend as the solo leader after 36 holes at the Safeway Open.  Harry Higgs also got off to a fast start at Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course which featured an albatross on his final hole of the day on Friday.  He is alone in solo 2nd place and two strokes behind Burns on the Safeway Open leaderboard.  After missing most cuts since the restart, Russell Knox came to Napa, California with a clean slate and brought his “A” game.  He sits along with Cameron Percy and D.J. Trahan at T3 on the Safeway Open leaderboard heading into the weekend.  Brendan Steele continued his solid form after finishing last season on a good note at the BMW Championship.  He is joined by Si Woo Kim, Tim Wilkinson, Ricky Barnes and Kristoffer Ventura at T12 on the PGA Championship leaderboard.  Shane Lowry, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth all failed to make the cut at the Safeway Open and thus will get a head start on their next test at Winged Foot Golf Club for the U.S. Open.  Nevertheless, plenty of scoring is in the weekend forecast at the Safeway Open so all signs point to a fantastic finish at Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course.

Round 1 Scoring Avg:  70.622

Round 2 Scoring Avg:  70.071
