Bonus Model Targets- RBC Canadian Open

We’re smack dab in the middle of back to back majors for the PGA Tour as we continue to work through the second half of a mixed-up Olympics schedule. A few of our plays from last week disappointed with poor Friday showings (Knost, Henley) and thus missing the cut. If you went with the fades, that helped quite a bit with nobody outside of JB Holmes really performing well and hitting salary value.

Before the next Millionaire Maker and PGA Championship next week, we head north of the border for the RBC Canadian. This tournament has historically proven to be somewhat of a shootout with scores in the high teens winning at Glen Abbey. I still see plenty of value and a few guys who are mispriced, in a lighter talent field, on both sides of the fade/play line.

Here are a few guys that I’m looking at this week:

Top Plays

Charley Hoffman: Hoffman looks to be a bit underpriced relative to his upside and scoring ability on a course that should provide plenty of opportunities this week. At $8,900 Hoffman still gives us plenty of flexibility in rostering another top talent or building a more balanced roster, which will likely be a bit contrarian this week.

Colt Knost: Back on the wagon with Colt this week after a disappointing Friday to miss the cut at The Open last week. This week the scoring should prove to be a bit easier and we know how consistent Colt has been this season.  He will find fairways, make putts and put up some low numbers this week at Glen Abbey.

Dustin Johnson: DJ grinded his way to a top-ten finish at The Open last week after failing to score while the conditions were ideal on Thursday. Still a solid, big mistake-free weekend from Dustin as he comes into the RBC where over 40% of the DraftKings points scored this week will be on four holes, three of them Par Fives. With the wedge in hand more times than the field, I like his odds of racking up fantasy goodness for his owners this week.

William McGirt: McGirt comes into RBC having never missed a cut in this tournament which also included back-to-back runner up finishes in 2012 and 2013. Currently in his best season of his career, don’t be surprised if he gets his second career victory this week as he comes into a course he knows quite well.

Other plays I like (in order of preference):

  • Kyle Reifers
  • Jonas Blixt
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick

Fades?

Robert Garrigus: Another week of Garrigus at $8,000+ and I’m still not buying it. He carded a top-thirty finish a few weeks back after cracking that salary level for the first time in his career and on the season. There are still better plays above and below RG this week.

Graham DeLaet: Has he fully recovered from his self-diagnosed chipping yips? Playing on his home turf, DeLaet gets a salary bump without any great tournament history on his side. He didn’t get a top-ten finish last week in his first event back since his Memorial WD. I’ll still wait and see in a deeper talent field.

Emiliano Grillo: Grillo has been playing some fantastic golf as of late and has been outperforming his price. Including Emiliano in the fade section this week is purely a game theory / ownership play in which everyone is talking about it after his finish at The Open last year. You have to ask yourself, do you see him winning with his shaky putting? If the answer is no, then your upside to fading him is much greater than playing him at a potential 15-20% ownership rate.

Others I will be avoiding:

  • Brian Stuard
  • Danny Lee

Best of luck this week!
