Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Waste Management Phoenix Open

One of the more exciting weeks of the entire PGA year is upon us for the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  I have always loved pulling up a seat on the couch early afternoon on Sunday to watch the final round of play then have it lead right into the Super Bowl. The only time I will be getting up is to make our traditional Super Bowl appetizers like wings, potato skins, ribs, meatballs, artichoke dip, etc.  I might even mix in some cocktails.  Hopefully celebrating, not commiserating.

Last week was a great example of why I recommend playing both cash games and GPPs.  My cash game rosters absolutely dominated, while my GPP core was very undominant, if that is a word.  By locking in Finau, Howell, and Woodland into cash games, it helped fuel my cash games to go 3 for 3 cashing.  GPPs were unfortunately a different story.  The obvious bright spot was having Noren in my core, but also Leishman performed well, and Howell, Hadley, Cam Smith, and Spaun produced value as well.  Way too many grenades however included in the core and I could not escape them on any of my rosters.  Xander, Lowry, and Vegas were the ones that really crippled me as I had heavy exposure to all of them.  I also had decent exposure to guys like Stanley, Glover, Hoffman, and Molinari who made the cut, but did not do much more than that.  Overall, easily a losing week in GPPs last week for me, but luckily my cash games made up for the loss and I also was able to do extremely well in Euro DFS last week.  I am hoping to bounce back this week with my core and be able to celebrate leading into the Super Bowl.

The Tour doesn’t head far from San Diego this week as Scottsdale Arizona will be the host of this weeks event as it has for many years now.  Although the tournament has been played at TPC Scottsdale for over a decade and you can use Tournament History all the way back, I would recommend putting an emphasis on the past few years as there was a major renovation done to the course in 2014.  Really the name of the game in Phoenix is pounding greens, so I will place a lot of emphasis on approach game and proximity to the hole. The greens are not very fast or undulating and are very forgiving.  This is why we have seen great ball-strikers who lack in the putting department succeed so much over the years.

The pricing on Draftkings is very interesting this week, and I will talk in-depth about that below.  I will be using a specific strategy as far as my overall lineup composition goes this week.
