Zach and I founded FGI in 2014 and had played DFS golf for a couple years before that, so to say we have seen a thing or two within the industry would be an understatement.  Some of you have been with us all that time, which I think is so amazing great.  If you have been with us since then, you have probably heard us talk about all of the things that we have experienced that go into being a winning, long-term player in this game.  From bankroll management, to game selection, to strategy, etc, etc.  The difference between last week’s RBC Heritage and this week’s Zurich Classic for me is the perfect opportunity to talk about how to manage your bankroll based upon comfortability with that particular week’s event.  I shared with you my love for Harbourtown last week and how much I have admired that course and that tournament through the years.  Also, how much success I have had throughout the years in DFS and outright betting for the RBC Heritage.  There is just something about that event that I feel really good about and really confident about being able to be successful in DFS and outright picking.

The success continued last week as I had a big week in GPPs, including getting a team across the finish line and successfully qualifying for this year’s Fantasy Golf World Championship.    I was able to do this even without Stewart Cink being a significant core player (zero exposure in 20 man lineup builds and only as a tertiary player in 150 lineup builds).  I chose to play heavy last week 25% of my overall bankroll, because of my comfortability and success I have had in the past with the RBC Heritage.  Normal weeks, I play between 10-15% of my overall bankroll.

I am not saying any of this to brag, lord knows the second you think you have DFS figured out completely, inevitably you take a month long beating. I share this with you to demonstrate the difference between an event which you feel really comfortable with and have done well with in the past and thus going a heavier and an event like this week’s Zurich Classic.  Having zero history with DFS for this event and frankly not knowing the rules or format until this morning, because Draftkings did not feel the need to share that they were even going to be having contests for this event with content providers, does not make we exude confidence in being able to smash this week.  That does not mean I will not try my absolute hardest to strategize and find ways for myself and all of Team FGI to be successful in GPPS.  It does mean that the prudent thing for most of us should be to lower the amount of bankroll we have at risk this week.  Personally I will be dropping down to 5%.  Managing bankroll based upon experience and comfortability with an event/course is a big part of being able to remain profitable over the long-term, which is the most important thing.  Having a big week last week and then dumping it all away on an event that we don’t feel great about this week is not a wise decision.  To summarize, there are courses and events that I seem to really have a great feel for and have continued success year after year (RBC Heritage, The Players, Kapalua, TPC Boston, to name a few).  I encourage you to identify what those events are for you.  Go through your notes each year, which I also encourage you to do and refresh yourself as to why you have had success with that particular event in the past.  On those weeks that you have identified, feel free to increase your weekly bankroll.  Then on weeks with events like this or possibly other events that you just don’t seem to ever have a good feel for, cut back your bankroll.  Nothing says you have to play any amount each week.  If you hate a particular event/course and you always seem to get obliterated, take the week off.  We have seen so many players/websites/”experts”come and go in the time we have been around, and one large part of that is bankroll management and one piece of that is weekly exposure.  I hope this was helpful for you Team FGI, because my #1 goal is to make/keep  you a winning and profitable player.  Best of luck this week!
