Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Wyndham Championship
It’s hard to believe the final major of 2018 is in the books as it feels like yesterday we were getting ready for Augusta. We still however have a ton of great golf to go with the FedEx Cup Playoffs over the next month, but it does feel good to end the majors on such a good note. I have heard from a ton of you who used my core last week to help fuel big time cashes, including several of you that won five figures. Helping Team FGI win any money is fantastic, but it makes me so happy when you folks can win such large lump sums. Your hardwork has paid off and to those of you that have not hit a big one, if you continue to use the tools on our site and put in the time and effort and keep your head afloat it is only a matter of time.
For the third consecutive week, we have had the winner of the tournament in our core. Koepka appeared to be good value at his price and he fit perfectly into our strategy of stacking three guys in the $9k range. I had several teams in contention that had various stacks including Koepka, Thomas, Rahm, and Day. Several of those teams also had low owned Cabrera Bello and Hatton on them as well as their performance both shattered their low prices. Another low dollar, low owned guy who gave the core a boost was Julian Suri. He is a guy that we have had our eye on all year both on the European Tour and PGA Tour and we have actually rostered him quite a bit. A very talented young player, who most folks are not familiar with and we can take advantage of that with his low ownership. Others that had nice weeks for us were Thomas Pieters who very few people were on and Tony Finau who interestingly enough scored the 15th most Draftkings points despite the fact that he finished T42. That is a very important point item that we need to always remind ourselves of that we are looking for birdie-makers. DK rewards volatility and birdies value far outweigh bogies penalty.
Of course it was not all lollipops and ice cream as we certainly had plenty of grenades, none more painful than Louis Oosthuizen’s pre tee off wd. This has been an issue in the past for Oosy, but not lately, so we had a false sense of reliability, but that turned around a bit us. With the way he had been playing coming into the PGA Championship I would have loved to see how he fared. No indication of any nagging injuries or problems were known prior to the tournamant by anyone, so there is really nothing we can beat ourselves up over. Other grenades included Paul Casey, Tommy Fleetwood, Kyle Stanley, and Dustin Johnson. The biggest disappointment for me personally was Rickie Fowler. His T12 finish wasn’t catastrophic for us, but after his opening -5 on Thursday, to follow up with progressively worse rounds each day (67, 69) and still be in the mix and have a chance on Sunday, only to shoot one of the worst rounds of anybody on the course on Sunday (71) was extremely disappointing. I really felt like Fowler was going to win a major this year and although he was close (2nd at The Masters), he was unable to get it done another year.
This week we move on to a bit of a filler in between the PGA Championship and the FedEx Cup Playoffs, although there are a handful of big names. I like weeks like this and I will talk about why below.
