Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Wyndham Championship
The fourth and final major has come and gone, but that does not mean we do not have a ton of exciting golf events to come this season. The FedEx Cup playoffs start in two weeks and stretch for four weeks. Then although not huge events, the Fall golf season has proven to be very profitable over the last three years for Team FGI and I always look forward to that.
Out of the 20 guys in my Core for the PGA Championship last week only 4 missed the cut, but unfortunately we did not have Kisner, Oosty, or Thomas, which you really needed in order to take down a big GPP. A couple of items that I found fascinating in the GPP world last week. 1. The aggregate ownership for the winner of the $8 GPP on Draftkings was 36%. I don’t remember the last time I have seen aggregate ownership that low for a GPP winner. The aggregate ownership for the winning millionaire maker team was 74%, which is right in the range that we try and target for our GPP teams. 2. The other thing that shocked me was that Justin Thomas was not on the roster of the teams that placed 2nd and 3rd in the millionaire maker contest. It is extremely unusual in an event with 100,000 entries to not have the winner on a successful team especially when they are 10% as Thomas was. Usually the top hundred teams at least will have the winner in an event that size.
It turned out that leaving Spieth out of the Core was the correct thing to do, but the heavy exposure to Rory was very detrimental. I still had some teams in contention thanks to stacking Hideki, Fowler, and Koepka on some teams, all of which were outstanding. I also mixed in a little Patrick Reed, who I mentioned in my column last week as a possible home run. The guys who crushed some of my rosters were Brendan Steele, Xander Shauffele, and of course Daniel Berger. I have no explanation for Berger’s performance as I really liked his prospects coming into the event. I mentioned in my weekly email that everybody in the world was recommending Berger last week, so if you had the foresight to fade him because of the big ownership then I congratulate you as you made an outstanding strategic move that paid off.
This week we have a bridge between the PGA Championship and the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs and thus do not have many of the worlds finest showing up to play in Greensboro. Still we have an event that will be entertaining because it will mean so much to a bunch of guys in their quest to finish in the Top 125 in the standings and be able to play next week at The Northern Trust.
The GPP offering on both Fanduel and Draftkings are pretty decent despite the weaker field this week. So lets go hit some big paydays.
Best of luck this week!
