Jeff’s Hardcore Core- WGC Mexico
This weeks WGC event used to be one of my very favorite before the PGA Tour decided to go political and rip it from one of my favorite courses in Trump National Doral and the Blue Monster. Instead we head to Mexico where we hope guys don’t get hit with Montezuma’s revenge like they did last year. We have a 65-player field and no-cut, so we definitely need to decide on the proper strategy for this week, which I will discuss in-depth below, but before I do, let me review the bloodbath that was the Honda Classic last week.
I decided to fade all of the Top 4 highest priced guys in order to keep a more balanced lineup construction. Obviously Justin Thomas’s win did not do us any favors as far as giving us a chance to win any large field GPPs. You just knew it was JT’s week when he plunked it off a rock and it ended up within 15 feet of the hole. He went from a double bogey to a guaranteed par with chance for birdie. Fading Fowler, McIilroy, and Garcia proved very beneficial and many of my balanced teams cashed, but nothing big. As I talked about last week, I loved Tommy Fleetwood and he delivered for us with a 4th place finish. He was a bit higher owned than I anticipated however and guess his price was too low for people to pass up. Others in the middle range that helped us were Dufner (T17), Simpson (T5), and Henley (T24). Ben An was an awesome snag in the low $7k range as well. In the end though my core was decimated by missed cuts. Hatton, Kizzire, Kisner, Hadley, and Saunders hurt me the most. I had very few teams get 6/6 through the cut, which was kind of the theme last week as only 3.8% of teams got 6/6 through the cut in the $33 Dogleg event on Draftkings. I actually had several teams cash in large field GPPs with only 4/6 making it through the cut, which is a true indication of how brutal last week was. Hopefully we will not have too many more of these weeks, because they are very depressing. It feels like the perfect time for a no-cut event this week, so we do not have to be depressed on Friday night this week.
