Jeff’s Hardcore Core- WGC HSBC
Last week the Core was really strong for the CIMB, but it could have been close to the “nuts”, had I not faded Justin Thomas. Let me share with you my rationale for doing so. I am the first one to admit when I am wrong, and I really thought Justin Thomas was going to be highly owned (between 25-30%) of the field. In GPPs, being able to shave off roughly a third of the field, if a player performs poorly is a huge edge. Plus, Thomas’s price was expensive. Last year Ryan Moore’s ownership was high in this same event coming off of a win and I felt Thomas’s would follow that trend. In addition, the CIMB is a tournament where certain players tend to play well (or poorly every year). It was a strategical decision and I was wrong, because Thomas’s ownership was only 13%. So, I am not necessarily upset with myself for fading him because he won the tournament, but rather because his ownership was low and I wish I had some exposure. If you were to tell me his ownership was only 13% beforehand, I would have had him in my core. The purpose of this column is to share with you everything I know about GPP strategy, in which I have had a lot of success with. Unfortunately I am not perfect, and this was an example of that, so we need to learn together and put this in the back of our minds for next time. Having Thomas included with the rest of the core would have won some GPPs for you folks. Here were the highlights: Matsuyama (2nd), Lahiri (T3), Cabrera Bello (T10), Piercy (T10), Knox (T10), Kim (T10), and Grillo (T17).
On to another no-cut event, only this time we have most of the top players in the world who will have four rounds to accumulate Draftkings points. I will be targeting certain players in an attempt to set myself apart from others in GPPs this week.
Best of Luck!
