Jeff’s Hardcore Core- WGC Bridgestone Invitational
It was quite a week for the Core last week as I was flooded with screenshots from FGI members who crushed GPPs. Congratulations to all of you who had big wins, little wins, or any wins. We have been hot lately and very solid for most of this entire season, so let’s keep up the momentum through the end of this season and crush Fall golf like we usually do as well.
I spent a lot of time looking at Johnny Vegas as an option for the core last week and ultimately it came down to his form just being too bad for me to include him. I can usually overlook a missed cut or two or a terrible performance at a major if I think a guys game sets up well for the course and has a good tournament history, but missing five cuts in a row and being awful for the past two months was too much. His love for Glenn Abbey though shined through and we missed having the winner in our core, which is always hurtful. Luckily he was only owned by 1-3% of the field in most GPPs. Members of the core like Woodland, List, Hagy, Power, Stallings, Holmes, Reavie, Campbell and of course Finau (DK point monster) all came up huge for us. Even DJ who only finished T8 accumulated a ton of DK points. The guys who bit us were Martin, Lahiri, Ruiz, and Mcgirt. After Thursday’s round I was loving being part of the .2% who owned Ruiz, but Friday was a horse of a different color as he was absolutely awful and crushed my best $333 team. I had Peter Malnati in my core, but at the last minute swapped him out for Dirt Mcgirt, because his stats looked so good, that was a poor decision by me. When you are doing your weekly note-taking session as I recommended doing a few weeks back, be sure to note how successful we were targeting long-ball hitters who score at will on Par 5s (DJ, Vegas, List, Hagy, Woodland, Holmes, etc) for next year’s Canadian Open.
This week we have a loaded field for the WGC Bridgestone. I want to talk about strategy heading into a 70 man, no- cut event and what we should be looking at for roster composition.
