Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Valero Texas Open

Another really great week for The Hardcore Core last week. Having four guys out of 17 who finish T4 or better is about as good as you can get. On top of that 13 of those 17 made the cut and produced four rounds of points. I personally did quite well in GPPs with this core and thanks to all of you who let me know of your successes as well. If Matthew Fitzpatrick would have simply been 1 stroke better, I would have made into five figures. Zach and I were discussing this last night, just how razor thin the margin is between massive success and failure. Take for example Paul Casey who was a member of the Hardcore Core last week. He missed two putts within five feet on Friday and if those fall (like they do the majority of the time), it could have propelled a lot of our lineups. All Fitzpatrick needed to do was play +2 or better over the last five holes on Friday and he gets through to Saturday, gets at least one more round in, and possible makes a run like he did at The Masters. Instead he was the only guy who missed the cut on a couple of my rosters in which I had Grace, Na, Dechambeau, and Donald. That razor thin margin can be extremely painful at times, but every once and while we will be on the right side of it. Keep working hard with your research. Read Roger’s Preview column, Zach’s Daily Spin, and my Hardcore Core and see what all of us are thinking each week. The reason we do this is so you can get a variety of opinions and points of view. Then you do the research and formulate your opinion, and win.

This week the Tour heads to San Antionio, where the weather last year determined the outcome more than any other event all season. The difference between Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon tee times was an incredible 4 strokes. I will send out my usual email on Wednesday night with the latest forecast, but as we saw last week weather is always pretty unpredictable. One thing I want to stress in DFS Golf is to have a short memory for certain things. Just because a player burned you bad the previous week does not mean you need to avoid him like the plague the following week like most people naturally do. Brandt Snedeker is a good example this week and we talked about it a bit on the webcast. Zach and I have played a lot of poker, including many years in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and I find it very analogous in many ways to DFS. Just because you get sucked out on with pocket Aces in the previous tournament, it doesn’t mean that you stop playing them after that. You make the best play regardless of result, because that is what is going to provide you the best expected value over time. I am going to be playing Snedeker this week, even though he burned me last week. The best players in the world miss the cut sometimes and if everything else lines up for them the next week or in three weeks I will pull the trigger again. Do not let your emotions sway you from your research. Best of luck this week and let me know if you are in the hunt over the weekend!
