Jeff’s Hardcore Core- Tour Championship
It feels like I blinked my eyes and the 2018-2019 PGA Tour season went by. The Tour Championship is upon us (a month earlier than we are used to) and it feels like yesterday that we were discussing the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. I will say that we are fortunate, because unlike the NFL season where we have to wait an long seven months before we get action again, us PGA guys only have to wait three weeks. The Greenbrier kicks off the start of the 2019-2020 season in just three weeks. We have found that the fall season is an excellent time to play DFS golf. A big reason for that is we know well all of the new players coming onto the tour. By following the Korn Ferry Tour closely, we know who of the newcomers have a chance to make an impact on the PGA Tour. Our tools and articles are going to give Team FGI a huge edge over others who have no clue as to who many of the new guys are.

Before we dive into the Tour Championship, let’s recap what turned out to be an amazingly great week with the BMW Championship.
What went right? For the second straight week I had the winner (Justin Thomas) in my core. I ended up having 30% exposure to Thomas, as I recommended in my article and in most GPPs that put us right around 2X overweight the field. Not only was I able to hit the winner, we also had the runner-up (Patrick Cantlay), 3rd place finisher (Hideki Matsuyama), 4th place finisher (Tony Finau), along with Corey Conners and Lucas Glover who finished T7, and Sungjae Im who finished T11. It was a smaller field, but anytime you can nail the Top 4 guys, the week is going to be a successful one.
In addition to those guys mentioned we also had decent performances for their price from Jason Kokrak (T19), Rory Sabbatini (T16),Wyndham Clark (T31), and Emiliano Grillo (T31). It was such a fun weekend following all of the FGI logos up near the top of leaderboards, I was rooting hard for all of you. Thank you for rocking the FGI logo, it makes it so fun for our community to follow each other and give support to one another. Congrats to all of you that I heard from via email and Twitter on your big wins this week. I have talked about this multiple times this year- we are not going to win every week. We might go several weeks without even being profitable. But, if you stay disciplined with your bankroll, you will be in the game long enough to experience weeks when we smash our core and give ourselves chances at life enhancing money.
What went wrong? Nothing every goes perfectly and last week was no exception. I took a chance on Koepka and DJ up top, because I felt it was the right thing to do strategically, knowing that they were going to be owned by only 10% of the field and that is exactly what happened. I will continue to make that play every week for the rest of my days playing DFS golf, when the same situation arises. Unfortunately, neither one of them rewarded us this time, but when you can get two of the Top 5 most talented players on the planet and such a small amount of people own them, it is the right move. So, even though they did not help us, we only had to invest 20% of our lineups into them to get us 2X the field. This left us 65% of our rosters without them and able to smash the rest of our core. I had a team finish 51st in the $1M Mini Main event with 147k entries that consisted of Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Lucas Glover, Sungjae Im, and unfortunately Andrew Putnam. If I could have had one share of my 20% exposure to Corey Conners land on that team rather than Putnam, I would have been able to bring home a huge payday. Sometimes the difference between winning $500 and $100,000 is really slim. Suffice to say, Mr. Putnam is not my favorite guy in the world right now. I also had a few other less than stellar picks like Nate Lashley, Chez Reavie, and of course one of my biggest disappointments of the week Bryson DeChambeau. I really felt like all the controversy would fuel him and motivate him, but instead it appeared it went the other way and he was not focused as he really played poorly every day.
Overall an amazing week, one of the best of the season. My hope is that we can smash this week’s Tour Championship and use the momentum heading into the fall season.
