Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The Players Championship
Along with The Masters, The Players Championship is my other absolute favorite tournament of the year. For one, we have a field that is equal, if not better than the major tournaments, plus I absolutely love TPC Sawgrass. I was fortunate enough to go check out the course last year and was blown away by the layout and the shape of the course. It is extremely challenging, yet fair and I think most every player has only good things to say about it every year. We can expect very warm temperatures again this year. I am not sure if they will top the sweltering 95 degree heat of last year, although it felt like 150 degrees as I walked about 27 holes and then baked in the sun on a hill overlooking the 17th island green. I will certainly dive deep into The Players and my strategy and core this week for DFS, but first lets talk a bit about last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
I believe my four favorite courses on tour are TPC Sawgrass, Augusta, Harbourtown, and Quail Hollow. I really enjoyed watching the tournament last week, although it was a bit frustrating from a DFS perspective for me because as I was writing my column last week, I had decided to be contrarian up top and go with Jason Day as my top tier guy and even got to the point of writing up a paragraph as to why. We expected him to be the lowest owned of the Top 4 guys and he was. When I was finalizing my article on Tuesday, I decided to pull him from my main core and just included him down in my peripheral plays with a brief write up. I originally had him at 30%-40% and shaved that down to 10% in favor of Fowler and JT up top. I was kicking myself all weekend because I could have won a lot of $ and Team FGI a lot of money, if I just would have kept my original hypothesis. It is not that JT and Fowler did horribly, they just did not win like Day or even pay off their price. Outside of the botched tinker, the core was ok. List, Simpson, Stanley, Hadley, Hadwin, and Howell III all did an admirable job. Fleetwood, Streelman, Noren, Matsuyama, and Glover were complete horseshit. I did not have a winning week, which is frustrating, when I think about what could have been with a much bigger chunk of Day. Damn it.
I do want to give a special shoutout to long-time FGI member Luke Sigle for taking down the $4 GPP on Draftkings and winning $20,000. Job well done Luke!
The last several weeks, players from my Crystal Ball article that I wrote previewing guys this season has been absolutely on fire and it kept killing it last week with Aaron Wise, Bryson DeChambeau, and Peter Uihlein all finishing in the Top 5. Be sure to check out that article if you have not already: Crystal Ball Article:2018
Now onto The Players!
