Jeff’s Hardcore Core- THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

I have talked numerous times about just how hard it is to win GPPs. I have received so many emails from FGI members who have had big-time success and won tens and even hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is the upside of GPPs, but there is also a downside. Each and every week it is difficult to identify not only six guys who are going to make the cut, but also who will make a charge over the weekend and accumulate the points necessary for a big cash playing GPPs.  If it has been weeks or months without a big cash for you, do not worry, that is not uncommon. We advocate to play the majority of your weekly bankroll in cash games to accumulate your bankroll and then take a shot with a much smaller percentage of you bankroll in GPPs for a huge payday. Obviously you are going to lose more often than you are going to win playing GPPs, it is a fact, and you need to accept it.

This week on Draftkings, the $100,000 grand prize is back in the $3 Drive to the Green Contest. I absolutely love this contest because it gives players with lesser of a bankroll a chance at huge money. I encourage you to identify a core of players, and feel free to use some part or all of mine and build multiple lineups, giving yourself a chance at big $. I will be doing 100, $3 teams this week and will have 18 players in my GPP core and also mix in about 10 others to complete my rosters. A total of 20-30 guys is a decent amount of golfers for 100 teams.

I am looking for a combination of great ball-strikers and putters this week. I actually looked at the Top 75 players on the PGA Tour in Ball Striking and Putting to see who ranked well in both statistical categories. One key concept I want to share with you is when you are looking back at current form/recent results, be sure you know the context of the result. For example, it is not enough to know that Henrik Stenson missed the cut last week at Wells Fargo. Does this mean that we should not like him this week at The Players Championship? Absolutely not. That missed cut could not mean any less. There is a reason none of us at FGI recommended him or rostered him last week and that is because his game did not fit Quail Hollow. It was a bombers course and Stenson rarely even uses his driver off the tee. He had never had success there and the result was to be expected. You need to know that and factor it into your decision making. I will give you another example of what I am talking about. Bill Haas. Last week he missed the cut at Quail Hollow. Even though he had three straight Top 25 finishes coming in, including a runner-up at Valspar, we did not recommend him either last week.  Again, he is a shorter hitter off the tee and it was a long course that favored bombers. What I am trying to say is looking at results without any context is worthless. Read our columns, watch our webcast, and really dive into who plays well on certain courses and who does not. Be sure to look at results at HarbourTown (RBC Heritage) for an idea of what kind of player fits TPC Sawgrass for this weeks event. Zach Johnson today said that he believes that is the course that is most similar, which is what I have been saying for a couple years now.
