Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The Open Championship
I have been grinding for a week now on Open Championship research and after going back and forth a few hundred times I finally feel comfortable with the core that I have built. Before I dive into my strategy and core for the Open, let’s review The John Deere Classic. No matter how much I pour over the data, I cannot come up with any reasons how anybody could have predicted that Michael Kim was going to put up such a historic performance. Missed cuts in seven of his last nine tournaments, including the prior three. Two middling finishes at TPC Deere Run in the past. Not even Michael Kim knew he was going to have such a life altering week. It just demonstrates the volatility and unpredictability that is involved in DFS Golf. Thankfully, unlike most weeks where we need the winner in our core to win a large field GPP, we did not this week as Kim was owned by .15% in the large $5 and .09% in the $44 and none of the winners owned him. As it turned out, the lower dollar players in my core played spectacularly and many of the higher dollar guys did not. DeChambeau withdrew with an injury, Kyle Stanley was dreadful and missed the cut as did Brian Gay, and Chesson Hadley appeared to want an early flight out, missing the mdf. Chez Reavie was also a complete bust at $7,500 and was one of my higher owned players. Niemann and Zach Johnson both did enough to keep teams afloat enough for $7k guys and Chris Kirk’s T23 was good but not amazing. I certainly wish I had Molinari in my core and paired him with the $7k guys I owned because most of them killed it. Streelman (T7), Dahmen (T2), Brown(T12), Hughes (T16), Duncan (T12), Burgoon (T2), and Ryder (T2) were all fantastic and far and away outproduced their salary. This is one of those weeks that you could have easily had winning teams leaving several thousand dollars of salary cap space on the table. Anyway, we are done with the weak fields and onto some loaded fields in the coming weeks, starting with The Open Championship this week. Be sure to utilize all of our tools and if you are building multiple lineups, be sure to try our new lineup generator, which I can confidently say is the best, most comprehensive available anywhere.
