Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The Open Championship

This week we have the third major of the season, The Open Championship.  For all the pertinent information on the course and stats be sure to read Pari’s preview column and Zach’s Daily Spin .  Of course with another major, comes another millionaire maker tournament on Draftkings.  This time around they have reduced the size of the field and increased the buy-in.  I have heard many people in the industry complain, but I actually do not mind the change.  It cuts the field in half and reduces the amount of/chance of duplicate lineups at the top.  Look, 100,000 player field is still enormous, this way it will just cut down on the amount of lineups people have.  This isn’t necessarily a bad thing for us, as we use a concentrated core to build our lineups around.

Over the past three years, The Open Championship has been the major in which I have had the most success with playing DFS Golf.  Last year I was able to win my second seat in the Fantasy Golf World Championship with The Open.  If you have not read my article How to Qualify for the Fantasy Golf World Championship, which describes my lineup exactly and the thought process that went into building the winning lineup.

Jeff’s Hardcore Core & The Open Strategy-

Although The Open rotates courses every year, just like the U.S Open, in my opinion that tournament history for the event is very important to analyze.  The links style courses in Europe are very different than most of those in the United States (although Chambers Bay and Whistling Straits are a couple exceptions).  Some players excel on links style courses and others flounder.  Look at our Tournament History Page to see who those players are.

Per usual the pricing structure for Draftkings is incredibly soft, meaning you can build an all-star lineup easily with the allowed cap.  For this reason, I believe Jason Day and Dustin Johnson will be among the highest owned players this week, as people will be able to easily roster them and not jeopardize the entire lineup.  I personally will have a lot of exposure to European Tour Players.  The first reason is they are used to the links style course and the crazy weather shifts that take place all the time.  Wind and rain are common to the area and those who can endure will succeed.  The other reason is I think some of their ownership will be lower than their counterparts on the PGA Tour.  Guys like Wiesberger and Sulivan  will not have their ownership reflect just how great their current form is.

As always I will send out an email on Wednesday, with the latest weather report.  Stacking tee times becomes the most valuable of any tournament all year at The Open.  The tough part however, is the weather is very unpredictable over there and large winds can pop up at any time.  For that reason, I like to wake up early on Thursday morning and see what the weather is like.  If it is nice, roll out a Thursday am/Friday p.m stack.  With bad, unpredictable weather, if you know for sure a player will get in a round in decent conditions we take it.  Best of luck to all of you this week, I really like our chances.  Hopefully we can say a part of Team FGI became a millionaire.
