Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The Olympics

Last week was a decent week from the Core as it included the winner, Russell Knox, Justin Thomas (3rd), Patrick Reed (T11-not great for his price), Brendan Steele (T17), Tyrrell Hatton (T17), and Ryan Moore (T17).  Four of the core missed the cut and I do not know about you, but the Chad Campbell MC hurt me the most.  Everything lined up for him, including what appeared to be a really cheap price.  It was very much like the Daniel Summerhays MC at the RBC Canadian Open for me in pain.  I really liked Berger and Koepka, but the injury concerns were too much for me, which was a mistake. I fault myself, as I have used questionable status in the past on talented guys in GPPs and it has paid off great, sometimes.  Somehow, I neglected to utilize that strategy and missed out on a couple of Top 10s from those guys.  Consider it a lesson learned for those of you who are new and a refresher for the rest of us veterans.  In GPPs we need to take shots on contrarian plays, we are going to lose more times than we win, but when we do win, it is going to be big.

There is certainly a lack of information for The Olympics this week which reduces our edge over the field so be cognizant of that.  The course is one that has never been played, so we do not have not tournament history or anything that would indicate which stats are the most important.  Gil Hanse, the architect of the course believes that the course he designed most comparable to the Olympic course is Castle Stuart in Scottland.  The Scottish Open was played on this course this year and 2011-2013, so we can reference the results of that tournament.  There is no true rough and no trees on the course, just native area with sand and brush, much like the Pinehurst course we saw a couple of years ago.  Some players have also compared it to the sandbelt courses found in Australia.   It isn’t a true links course, but it is much more similar to a links course than most of the courses in the U.S.     You have probably noticed that the pricing is extremely tight on Draftkings and makes it very difficult to roster the studs.  If you select Henrik Stenson you are limited to $7,500 average per player for your remaining five players.    The $20 contest has 57,000 entries so we are going to have to be a bit contrarian considering there are only 60 golfers to choose from.  You will find a few guys in my Core that you might not expect in an effort to be contrarian.  Also, keep in mind there is no cut, so players are guaranteed 4 rounds of accumulating points.

Best of luck this week!
