Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The Memorial Tournament

The Memorial Tournament is the tournament this week and it has one of the better fields of the year outside of majors.  As I write this, there have been tornadoes throughout Ohio, so I am hoping everybody and everything is safe. It is too early to analyze the weather, so stay tuned to my Wednesday email for the latest forecast and to see if either tee time wave looks to have an edge over the other.  As of now it looks like thunderstorms could play a role.  Before we dive into strategy and player core for the Memorial let’s recap the Charles Schwab Challenge.

What went right?  Last week, I talked about what type of player we should be targeting at Colonial and just as is always the case at Colonial that type of shorter and accurate off the tee, with a real accurate approach game was the exact type of player that dominated the leaderboard (Na, Putnam, Pan, Blixt, Sabbatini, Knox, Hatton, etc) We were exactly correct in targeting the correct type of player.  Targeting the exact players themselves, I did not do so well with, but that happens in GPPs.  C.T Pan was our best player as he finished T3 for only $7,300.  Others who gave us Top 10s were Rory Sabbatini (T6),  Russell Knox (T8) and Ty Hatton (T8).  Emiliano Grillo, Brandt Snedeker, and Scott Piercy all finished T19, which was not amazing, but also not bad considering their price and also how difficult it was to get guys through the cut.  As a matter of fact, I said in my article last week that I expected it to be a vey difficult cut and that came to fruition as less than 5% of teams had 6/6 guys through the cut despite it being an invitational tournament and the field only being 120 players (as opposed to 140-150).

What went wrong?  It really was an incredible cut as we lost Fowler, DeChambeau, Kisner, and Casey (WD) to it.  It is crazy to think that we also avoided other grenades like Rahm, Rose, and Xander who also bombed.  Pretty much you needed exactly Spieth or Finau from the upper prices to have completely avoided the carnage.  I wish those guys were the only players to suck from my core last week, but that was not the case.  Matt Jones hurt bad, as I continued to ride him as we have done all year and he missed the cut.  I also liked Chez Reavie and he missed.  Andrew Landry was a sleeper I took a small bite on in the $6k range and he sucked terribly.  Overall, a losing week for the core.  A great time to remind you to be disciplined with your bankroll management.  We had a very good stretch of success this year, but we have had a couple clunkers over the past month.  That is what GPP play is.  We take risks and build a tight core, so that when we hit it, we give ourselves multiple opportunities to have a large pay day.  When we employ this strategy we are going to have dud weeks, it is inevitable.  If you are risking more than 10-15% of your overall bankroll on a weekly basis you are subjecting it to way too much short term variance.  Keep yourself in the game and give yourself a chance to continue playing even with the bad weeks which are a part of this crazy game we love so much.  If you cannot handle the variance I encourage you to play more cash games.  There is nothing at all wrong with that and many people do that because they acknowledge their personality and tendencies and still want to be involved in DFS Golf.  I personally am fine staying disciplined with my bankroll and accepting the bad weeks as they come.  Stay in the game my friends and good things will happen.
