Jeff’s Hardcore Core- The American Express
We say goodbye to Hawaii and head back stateside to La Quinta, California for this week’s American Express. In the past it has also been called the Career Builder, Humana, Desert Classic, and the Bob Hope Classic.
Before we dive in, I just wanted to touch briefly upon the first two weeks of the year and how they are a great example of how the life of a GPP player goes. Week 1 worked out REALLY nicely, our core hit hard, and we were able to be successful (some of you very successful). Last week turned out to be a bit of an unpredictable mess with several guys from our core missing the cut (Tom Kim, Billy Horschel, and Keith Mitchell). Fortunately for us, the entire event was wonky and others who we were able to avoid like Sunjae Im, Jordan Spieth, Keegan Bradley, and Christian Bezuidenhout also missed the cut.
The moral of the story is that there are going to be great, winning weeks and there are going to be bad, losing weeks. It will be like this all year and every year into the future. There is no DFS Golf player on the planet who is profitable every single week in GPPs. The key is to limit your losing weeks and exploit your winning weeks. This is probably a good time to revisit the fact that you should not be exposing more than 10-15% of your overall/total DFS bankroll in any one week. Anything can happen, including the top three highest priced guys flat out missing the cut like we saw last week. This allows us to stay in the game and not go bankrupt because of one week. The longer we stay in the game, the more opportunity we have to spike the big paydays. This strategy works and is the only reason I have been able to be around playing for 10+ years. Be patient, stay disciplined, and stay in the game.
This week is always such a quirky tournament. First of all, they play a rotation of three different courses, two of which are extremely easy. Add to that the pro-am where we have to endure the annoying, awful amateurs kicking the ball around for the first three rounds. This is week I like to reduce my bankroll exposure down to 5-10%. As always, I will talk about strategy for this wacky event, as well as share with you my core of players for GPPs.
Best of luck Team FGI!
